Problems with an ADSL modem :(:(

Hey, can anyone relate here, or give some assistance please.

Basically, I got my ADSL from Zen Internet installed about 3 weeks back. Since then, I haven't been able to shut my computer down, it just stays on the "windows is shutting down" screen. Another thing lately is that my computer just resets at random, which doesnt just happen when surfing the net, it sometimes happens when joining/playing a game of CS. Naturally, this never happened before i got my modem, and doesnt happen when im not connected to the net

Some people think it may be a compatability problem with something on my pc, I have arranged for a new modem to be sent out, so I will check then. Anyone have this problem, or know of what the problem may be?

Cheers

What os are you using foo ? I recently moved one of my pc's upstairs (Win me) ,and when I set it up again it wouldnt switch itself off either. I turned it off manually for a couple of days ,and now it works again.
The pc on my desktop at work, whcih runs win 95, has never turned itself off, I have to wait till the windows bit goes off, leaving a cursor flashing in the top of the screen, then hold the on button in for 5 secs to turn it off.
There is something you can download to help this I beleive, on the Microsoft website, but it didnt work for that shitty pc at work !

Well throddy, I'm using windows xp. As for other info about my computer, all I can list is my spec, its a p3 600, G-Force 2 graphics card, I have just over 2 gig free so I know its not cos I have too little HD space (not that I guess that would do anthing anyway) my HD aint clogged with crap, and I don't believe to have a virus :(

I may be wrong but it could be that MS turn off thingymajig, though I must admit i thought it was only 98/95 that suffered from it. Have a look on the windows webby see if thres an update, other than that Im stumped m8 soz

Thanks throddy, I posted this in the wrong place as Tremor told me earlier, I should be getting a replacement modem by monday, if i get the same problem i'll just format my HD and start from scratch, could be something else I have installed, if there is still a problem, looks like it's back to ol' win 98 for me :(

foo is it a usb modem - if so it could be a power issue for it - for some reason on some mobos on all platforms windows will try to shut down the modem but then it cant re-initialise itself - one fix ive heard of is to run the modem off a self-powered usb hub

Try www.usbman.com if you think it has something to do with the modem. I had a power problem with my green frog modem thing in that it turned itself of through lack of power, so 2 problems could be linked

What Gravity says is very true plus make sure you've got the latest 1.6 drivers as they are proven with XP.

Well i went to www.usbman.com and I got the latest USB drivers. So far, since installation, I have been online for about an hour and 15 mins and so far no problems (touch wood). Apparently, if i return the modem and there isn't a problem from what Alcatel see, I am forced to pay once more for the one they send out (at £120 a modem - which includes VAT- im not willing to take that risk). Surely tho, as Grav may be able to clear up for me, if I am not happy with the service/goods provided, it is my right as a consumer to be given a replacement!
I have my bosses modem handy, so i can try that too and if i have a problem there then it must be my computer. Apparently the USB card or something could be a problem, as one person told me earlier but I dont know much about it myself.
As Tremor told me I have kinda posted this in the wrong place, but I can't be bothered to go over this all again elsewhere :p Thanks for your help fellas

... still running? ADSL and XP do not mix with all the old driver sets (take it from me as Throddy often wonders why I zap around the map in a laggy-esque manner!).

kungfoo - just re-read your original post - i too had the problem of my pc just rebooting itself randomly - according to www.usbman.com it is something to do with processors running over 300mhz(which yours is), for which there was a patch available to download to fix this problem(well it did for me)

It may also help if you can find out who makes your motherboard (mine was a ABIT KT7 piece of shit with a VIA chipset) as the patches may motherboard or even processor brand (i run on a Athlon) specific.

Unfortunatly i cant remember the exact url for the patch that i dled from, just search the site and should find what your looking for

Good Luck:)

Thanks Iamtheone, I was told from a lad that my motherboard could be a problem, since he had the same problem, with the same modem and even the same provider (not that it makes a diff who you get it from). I'll check the site again, drivers are probably an issue and so far, it only froze once, rather than just powering down. I still have the problem of not being able to power down whilst the modem is connected, searching through the site will no doubt end up with me stumbling across something helpful. It's very re-assuring to find that others have had this problem and that it isn't just common to myself

foo m8e - have u tried an external usb hub yet?? if u live near trem pop into my store - i have a saitek self powered hub going for £30 ( i may be able to knock a little bit off for ya ;) ) if it dont fix ur prob u can bring it back on 10 day return

as for the alcatel thing - get on to ur adsl supplier and tell them what alcatel have said and that ur not willing to pay for an exchange of a possibly faulty item - ur supplier should be able to sort something out for you as u can tell them ur purchase contract wasnt with alcatel it was with them as they sent u the modem - if i remember correctly a supplier can be held legally responsible for the first 3 months of a warranty before they can pass the buck to the manufacturer

I suggested the external hub option Grav, but doesn't he have to plug it into the usb on the pc? Wouldn't that kinda just be the same as plugging it straight into the pc? He lives way to close to me for my liking as well:(

That is true. Well, i found out this morning that it hasn't stopped resetting. My provider is Zen Grav, they were the ones who told me that Alcatel would charge me, but as you said I'm sure I don't have to pay if i'm not happy with the goods, which I obviously aren't. Currently trying a different modem, to find out once and for all whether or not it is the modem I am having problems with. If this one crashes, I think I'm gonna cry

nah trem - its an issue with the power getting to the modem - the modem is asking the motherboard for more power than the acpi system is willing to give it hence the shutdowns - an external hub with its own power supply should theoretically eliminate the prob because the hub will be supplying the power to the modem so the motherboard can get by quite happily without having to shut the port off because it thinks the internal components need the power more - if ya c what i mean :)

the joys of modern technology - its great when it bloody works!!

Ahhh then I sugest that you buy an external hub Foo, do this before you start going into new mobo territory, I would imagine the hub is the easier option, and for the love of god do it soon so I don't have to listen to your bitching anymore:eek:
