My sister has managed to get a whole lot of fuckin trojans and other shit on her computer.

So much so that random I.E sites pop up when on the computer. Even Firefox is getting anally raped. God knows what else is on there (Ad-Aware brought up close to 600 infections and my virus scanner picked up 10+ in the first 10 mins...)

I tried to run a AV Scan and Ad-Aware but every time I 'check' them ready to delete them, the trojans uncheck themselves.

I managed to delete all of the minor stuff and rebooted the computer but now it simply won't load again, I log into it and it comes up 'blah blah personal settings' etc. but the desktop never appears.

Is there any hope?

Have you tried it in safe mode?

If you've got a caddy take the HDD out and scan it on another computer or like marc said just format it

If it has as many bits of crap on it as you say its probably not going to be fixable and you should wipe the harddisk and do a fresh install of windows.

If you can still boot windows in safe mode you can hopefully copy any important files onto a usb stick or something.

If windows won't boot and you have another computer with a cd writer you can create a linux (ubuntu) live CD. Stick that in the drive and restart the computer, it will boot up linux from the CD and then you will have access to the harddisk to make backups.

Reinstall Windows on a second hdd, then copy all the crucial data from the old windows hdd. Be careful though... since you don´t know what exactly is infected, only copy the most important files and drop the rest.

Then reformat the old hdd and enjoy the extra space for new virus infected programs. :)

Inserting an infected HDD in another computer and removing viruses / trojans is easier, because the trojans have no connection to your registry or windows procecces (obviously), so you should be able to scan so you are able to salvage any important data.

First of all stop blaming your sis, just stop watching all that pr0n. And since you use AV and Ad-Aware thoose report the names of the infections, just google thoose and find removal tools. usually faster unless you're totally raped by them..

Theres a whole host of hard-core adware and spyware busters out there for free to use.

My main weapon is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

S&D is also an excellent tool. If you find specific threats, do a search on google for removing them as there are a few good tech forums who know how to get rid of the nasty things.

I remember getting virtumonde, it was a really horrible day.

Just reformat

I agree, just format and reinstall. Create a drive image when you have reinstalled and put her favourite apps back on. Viruses or not, its a windows machine and isn't really meant to remain stable for more than a month at a time anyway :)

I didn't really want to take this further than the computer.

I'm tempted to just do a fresh install.

The computer must be full of crap anyway.

Thanks for the help :)

There's a saturation point you reach with this kind of crap where it just becomes too much of a time waste to fix and it sounds like youve passed it tbh.

It will take you far less time to just flatten the hdd and reinstall the o/s which will also give you a 100% success rate.

If your sister loses some data because of this its unfortunate, but itll teach to avoid Limewire (or whatever else she's been on) in the future

I'd give Moosoft's The Cleaner one go to see if it can isolate and remove the worst of the trojan stuff.

If all else fails, there is no software problem so bad that FDISK can't fix. :)

There's only so much cleaning of family and friends machines I can take before I decide to force 'em down the Ubuntu road.

Seriously. It seems everyone not in IT just gets fucked by malware constantly.

You do it first if you think its fun..

I tried to, but I couldn't find that folder on my computer … so what to do now :(

But really, imho just boot the computer from a Linux CD with integrated virus scanner, that'll do the trick. I'd say that's the easiest thing to do before you simply take the HD out of the computer and mount it on some other system to check for viruses from there.

But really, once a system has been infected like this, it's just better to save the important data and reinstall the whole thing. Then you give your sister an external HD and tell her to store her data on there AND after installing and patching the whole system, you create an image. Next time her comp is fucked, you just smash the whole system, copy the image and done. No need to reinstall everything etc.

As marc said, reformat. The computer will be so smoother afterwards too :) And don't use some compaq/hp/dell etc recovery disc! They are usually filled with useless shit programs :)

teach your sister which porn sites are good to use.

you may think i'm taking the piss but my mate asked me to sort out all her trojans and it turned out it was from all the porn she was watching. after cleaning the pc i ended up showing her a load of good free and safe stream sites and she was thankful :p
