Problem removing programs after upgrade

Following mobo upgrade & XP Home re-installation I am getting messages about AVG being corrupt and need to reinstall. I have been trying to remove it via the control panel / add/remove programs option but the pc just hangs with a small window ("Remnant Cleaner"?) in the middle of the screen.

Same thing happens when I try to remove Symantec Liveupdate btw.

Anyone know how I get these off my pc?

tried to just delete the files manually, and then uninstall? sometimes that works when the uninstaller cant find any info they just delete whats left.
