Hey all

Just pondering, does anyone know why pride is classed as a sin? I guess this is classed as a religious question, I've never been devoutly religious but I have wondered about why pride is considered bad. I've always tried to take pride in my work etc, I dont know why that would be bad :(

Anyone know?

Pride comes before the fall...

[quote="http://www.allaboutgod.com/sin-of-pride.htm"
]The sin of pride is the sin of sins. It was this sin, we're told, which transformed Lucifer, an anointed cherub of God, the very "seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty,"1 into Satan, the devil, the father of lies, the one for whom Hell itself was created.2 We're warned to guard our hearts against pride lest we too "fall into the same condemnation as the devil."3

It was the sin of pride which first led Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit. In Genesis we read, "Then the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.' So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate."4 And who do you think was that serpent of old who first introduced Eve to this sin of pride? It was none other than the devil himself,5 eager to share his condemnation with others.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D.) wrote, "'Pride is the commencement of all sin'6 because it was this which overthrew the devil, from whom arose the origin of sin; and afterwards, when his malice and envy pursued man, who was yet standing in his uprightness, it subverted him in the same way in which he himself fell. For the serpent, in fact, only sought for the door of pride whereby to enter when he said, 'Ye shall be as gods.'"7 [/quote]

Cheers for the replies :D and lol tris :D

Seems to me that the bible confuses and blurs the area between Pride and Greed.

For example:

It was the sin of pride which first led Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit. In Genesis we read, "Then the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

That seems to me more like greed - wanting to be like god etc etc, rather than being proud.

I agree with the saying 'pride goeth before the fall' but only as a reminder to make sure that pride does not turn into greed and other bad stuff, but just pride on its own doesnt seem to be bad.

I agree it could be the starting place from which other bad things can come into it, but if you have enough self control pride is a good thing -- serves to try to make you do better, without being greedy - being proud of what you have would, imo, make someone less inclined to be greedy in a way, although I guess I can see whats being said.

If youre too proud to see your own mistakes its a bad thing.

If you know you did a good job, then be proud of yourself :)

Now if we forget all this churchy stuff...pride is good, being an ass about it is not.

anyway the pride thing i think thats a bunch of hooey too tbh becuse if you take pride in things then it shows you have self respect which is a good thing, however of your vain and a show off thats like a bad thing dude but tbh you can be vain and arrogant and still be a good human being so really i dont know what the hell theyre talking about tbh.

I think your problem is trying to find any sense in the bible.

The old man hit it right on the head. Theres nothing intrisically wrong with pride, but the human race has a tendancy to let it go to their head, cloud their judgement, and end up making a mess of things :)

I'm not sure about taking pride in your work in particular, as that, to me at least, depends on your job. I personally don't take pride in my job (in a bookstore), but neither am I embarassed about it. It's just something I do to, you know, be out there 'doing something', rather than sitting on my ass all day doing fuck all, and making a bit of money in the progress. I can imagine being pride of my job if it were something I studied for for years, or if it were a job I loved, but I've not had the pleasure of experiencing that, yet.
About pride in general, I'd say it's a good thing, as long as it doesn't turn into cockiness. Being proud or confident about something is all good, but showing it off all the time or talking to others with a lesser job/attribute/whatever in a degrading way, or basicly being a cocky ****, isn't something I consider to be a good thing.
