Q: In SI and ToA, there was an area listed as "Precache Options" in the Options Menu. This setting stated that Precaching "will decrease pauses when first entering the game or encountering other players."
Where did this setting go in Catacombs?
Should we still not have this option to help with Player lag while running Catacombs?
A: Great question. I tossed this to Dan the Man, our lead Camelot programmer. He replied, with a perfection of phrasing that I don't usually expect from technical people, "During the development of Catacombs, the sheer number of textures for armor and player races in the game began to make Precaching a less realistic option, to the point where enabling the option under Catacombs was not offering better performance, while incurring a substantial memory overhead. We made some specific optimizations in the Catacombs client to make the feature unnecessary, and so it is unavailable on the Catacombs client. We are of course monitoring player reports about performance (and yes, RVRing with the Catacombs client ourselves) and will continue to make optimizations as necessary."
Dan is in fact a psychotically hardcore player, with a burning zeal to kill and destroy. He's out in RVR all the time, and brings his experiences with the game's performance and handling to the office every morning. He scares me a tiny bit.
