No, Beta closes thursday 22nd and game goes live 28th.
Well it goes live 25th for me as a pre-order/betatester.

Having a blast in it.
Hope they impliment some sort of PvP soon.
Rumor is that PvP will come with the Villian expansion.

So it will be classic Good vs. Evil :)

Good vs. Evil suchs - now Evil vs. Evil would be much better... Good vs. Good might be interesting, but good guys always seem to have morals and all that other crap that makes them hero's getting in the way.

Basically what i'm trying to say is bad guys have more fun.

Played it for 2 days ( approx 20h of playtime, need some sleep to)
very solofriendly , awesome Costume Creator(its a game on his own), Dev's who listen, ect

I'm gonna buy this !

so for all the 1337d00ds who think it is/looks gay without even playing it, go exp your Zillion artifacts and make the Zillion whine threat about nerfed classes, zerging realms, stealing mobs/loot , ect....

City of Heroes will never have that imo.

seems we will be able to get the game electronically the day it goes live.

we wont have to import it from the usa and it should even be cheaper since we dont get the boxes manuals etc... most ppl dont read them anyways :)

i always dive into a game and only check the manuals for some references :)

the 28th is almost here. Back to lineage II until then :)

I have no doubt about CoH being nice and new but I'm seriously doubting it's endgame. Cause so far it's all hit, kill, murder and defeat mobs and bosses (and later on PvP with Villain Expansion) but if that's it it's kinda small but that's me... Just for that reason I probably won't get it.

Austin, TEXAS, April 23, 2004 —NCsoft® Corporation, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games, today announced its exciting lineup of games for next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), May 12-14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The games on display will include Guild Wars™, the compelling competitive role-playing game from Seattle-based ArenaNet™, the much anticipated Tabula Rasa™ from gaming pioneer, Richard “Lord British” Garriott and the smashing, fast-paced, Auto Assault ™ from the developers at NetDevil® . NCsoft will also be showing off the visually stunning Lineage ® II and City of Villains™, the first major expansion to Cryptic Studios'™ highly anticipated City of Heroes™ comic-book-inspired online game. CoH...

- The designers seem to have some weird idea the game should be fun out of the box, the basic mechanics seemed extremely well polished and a lot of fun, combat is certainly more active and interesting than most MMOGs. Certainly the mechanics of a battle are at least as interesting as daoc's.

- It's not medieval fantasy - which is going to put many current MMOG gamers off.

- It doesn't have crafting. It doesn't have housing. It doesn't have any sort of economy or items. And patching these things in wouldn't make much sense in the context of the game.

- THERE ARE NO SPAWN TIMERS. THERE ARE NO TELEPORT TIMERS. MAKING YOU SIT ON YOUR ASS FOR n MINUTES IS NOT CONSIDERED A VALID BALANCE TOOL.

- There is almost no downtime of any sort, waiting for an encounter to spawn? take a mission that provides one to order (balanced against your group size/level). Forming a group? /invite works directly across the entire game and appropriate heroes can port everyone direct to your spot. Worried about mana regen? mana works more like end in daoc - smaller pool, quicker regen, oh and mobs of all levels drop end potions, and hp potions.

- There are no 'essential' classes, there are no 'solo only' classes, there are no 'group only' classes.

- Sidekicking.

- You do not 'hunt' at static spawn points.

- It doesn't have pvp, and even when it does its very unlikely to work as well as daoc rvr does, the powers etc which make pve work so well are unlikely to transfer well to pvp.

- It's shiny.

- Most of the gameplay goes on in instanced missions created for your group, the upside is that it gives you much more of a sense of making progress (you clear a room, you move to the next room, repeat until you've achieved the objectives - you do not sit and wait for the same npc to come back to life so you can kill it again), the down side is that the instances sometime become a little generic, and occaisionally you do get stuck with an awkward mission where bad guys, location, and your own powers can be incompatible (though all this means is you need to find players who can help - it's not the end of the world).

- The character generation/art works incredibly well.

- Stupid names seem less irritating in the context.

- The real difficulty though, is that it's difficult to see how any long term elder game is going to work. If they get rvr with villans to work on top of the current engine then the game would own everything - but to be honest, I think it's very unlikely it could work (too much cc, melees would be horribly gimped without aggro management tools etc). And even an EQ style raiding endgame would be severly limited because there are no items.

You pays your money you takes your choice. /shrug. But I'm not convinced that it really has the longevity of daoc.

If nothing else though, messing around in beta was a great demonstration of how Catacombs instancing could make a massive difference to DAoC.

Instancing works.
