Portal is amazing...but,

I am stuck on one of the levels. I think it's probably the 8th or so level.

It starts with you having to make your way up about 500ft. You have to make a portal on the ceiling of where you want to be, then one at your feet to freefall onto the ledges.

I did all that, now i have a door which needs a box to be left on the big red button.

The next room has 4-5 turrets in, i have destroyed those, fixed the puzzle to make the little transport panel move, now i just need to pickup the box and get it to the previous area...thing is, i cant work out how to get to it. The box is in a charcoal area meaning i cant port into there. also the transport lift is not high enough for me to jump up

Either this will make perfect sense, or you wont have a clue what im on about.

lets hope its the first.

From the moving platform, jump down to the lower ledge. When you press the button you'll see the wall that opened up initially to let you in the room pokes out and angles itself upwards. When it's finished moving create a blue portal on the angled portion of the wall then an orange on the wall nearby to exit through the blue portal.

Quickly turn right and to the edge where you should see another floor about 30 feet below you, jump off and create an orange portal that should launch you across the room into the box room, grab the box, jump onto the moving platform and be victorious with your shiny new box

That's awesome thanks. I was going to go all the way back to the start, go into that knackered looking room and pick up the boxes, travel back and put them on the moving transport as a kind of ledge lol. Thanks again! fucking love the whole terminal velocity thing

That bit was time consuming but not too difficult.

I initially had problems where it dropped you into that pit with the 3 turrets. I kept trying to use the barrels to try and jump out of it - managing to get 3 on top of each other until I realised it wouldn't let me physically jump out.

My only minor complaint is that it was over within a few hours, but it was something different anyway.

downloaded HL2, TF2 and Portal in about 10hours or so, from 3 to about 1 in the morning

Steam (if you do not tell it otherwise), will patch/update your Steam games whenever new updates are released. They are fucking moron's leaving it running in the background whilst allowing automatic updates.

No offense because you never knew, but if you were to carry on with your current reasoning, you're pretty much saying "I fucking hate Newsgroups/Torrents/Limewire, all those downloads I have running are lagging DAOC".

Steam is really really good, and like MSN you can tell it to open when windows starts, automatically update the games etc etc.

Oh yeah completed Portal, was really fun. Noticed once completed you get to do some harder missions...think I'll let my brain recover first!

But the example still holds true, if you have potentially 5 games updating at once, it's gonna cause some lag...pressing Pause or closing steam or editing the options is a 2 second job so they're kinda to blame.
