Erm... it's hardly just him saying that. It's been the view of the Catholic church for a long time.

And the stupid thing is that the RC church brought in this "go forth and multiply" stuff to outbreed all those Protestant faiths that were springing up all over Europe.

In this day and age, I think they've lost their moral authority and certainly lost sight of the bigger picture. The bigger picture being that contraception might be one small way to help slow down the increase in world population. The problem with being one of the world's major religions is that they are dependant upon dogma and saying it again and again AND AGAIN!

I have a problem with the RC version of organised religion. Instead of telling you what you CAN do, they make a point of telling you what you CAN'T do and saying you'll burn in hell if you don't toe the line. It's kind of sad really.

Reminds me of how mother teresa indirectly helped killed hundreds of thousands of people by telling them not to wear condoms

the previous Pope also said it was wrong to wear condoms...so it's not just Benedict XVI. The Catholic Church is retarded in general, imho.

The news article says nothing of the sort!

"While in Africa, the pontiff is expected to talk to young people about the Aids epidemic and explain to them why the Catholic Church recommends sexual abstinence as the best way to prevent the spread of the disease."

"He gave a similar message to African bishops who visited the Vatican in 2005, when he told them that abstinence and fidelity, not condoms, were the means to tackle the epidemic. "

He is saying that using condoms and having sex is not the answer (although it kinda is the answer), the answer is to stop having so much sex!

There are stories of the men saying it's not what the church wants (wearing condoms) so they should not use any hence the aids problem

Without hearing his arguments it's hard to say whether or not he's stupid though. There is an argument for his case in that the use of condoms (a) isn't completely safe and (b) probably contributes (indirectly) to a more promiscuous lifestyle/culture. If in this more promiscuous culture people 'forget' their condom 'only this one time' it's more dangerous than in a culture where abstinence and marital fidelity are the rule.

That said: I do think it's a bit silly that the Vatican stresses their dislike of condoms so much. Although I understand where they're coming from, it's also obvious that it's often by far preferable to the alternative. This is also what most priests will tell you. (The catholic church isn't limited to the Vatican.)

If it wasn't for the Catholics we'd all be speaking Arabic and praying 4 times a day!

Where has he said that you ingnorant fucker

Exactly! :eek6:

"HIV/Aids was, he argued, "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem".

The solution lay, he said, in a "spiritual and human awakening" and "friendship for those who suffer""

Also;

"While in Africa, the pontiff is expected to talk to young people about the Aids epidemic and explain to them why the Catholic Church recommends sexual abstinence as the best way to prevent the spread of the disease.

He gave a similar message to African bishops who visited the Vatican in 2005, when he told them that abstinence and fidelity, not condoms, were the means to tackle the epidemic."

Christ almighty on a pogostick against the spanish armada...how wrong can people read things?

To those who don't get it, the message is that abstinence is the key and distributing condoms will increase people wanting to have sex in the first place.

Abstinence and distributing condoms don't mix.

Now if you want to argue how "abstinence doesn't solve anything and he's stupid to suggest that", then do so.

This comes from someone who doesn't give rats asses about the pope by the way...

Yes he preaches marital fidelity, but he also says using condoms only increases the problem. How is that taking it out of context? I dont get it. :p

Ofcourse you don't, try reading the thread one time.

Giving out condoms increases the drive towards sex.

It doesn't work with abstinence.

It's like saying "don't have sex, but here's a condom."

Nowhere does it say "using condoms while having sex increases aids".

Oh give it a rest you two.

It is clear to everyone not be a pedantic dick, that the Catholic Church would prefer the whole of Africa to convert rather than use condoms. They are historically against the distribution of condoms in Africa as it does not fit with their rules, this Pope is trying a different angle, trying to be more delicate. It does not change the fact that they are not helping the situation. They do not have to support the distribution of condoms, but they could turn a blind eye and preach abstinence without speaking out against them as well. All the Catholic Church's actions will do is confuse people as to whether it is safe or not to use condoms.

But what he fails to realise is that troughout our history we have been boinking eachother no matter what the religious leadership of the time has said about it. His tactic is like preventing car crashes by not letting people drive. And by ignoring this irrefutable fact he proves that we should not be listening to him.

The original dispute was based on false statement.

He didn't say "condoms spread aids", that's a fact.

He said condoms are not the solution.

That is a world that will never exist though, especially in Africa. Religion loves removing choice. The only real way to reduce the amount of STD's being spread is to educate people in safe sex. I am not against the church preaching it's values, but they should not deny people the chance of life because extra marital sex does not agree with them.

How about you give it a rest you judgmental dick?

Give your opinion but f*ck off with the insults.

Then stop raising to Goorbs baits EVERY single time. It is boring as hell. And it would have de-railed the thread.

Well that's besides the point really. That's an opinion on if church should or shouldn't be there, not about what he said or someone claims he said.

It wasn't derailing, it's quite on topic.

I am not arguing he said she said. I will leave that to you and Goorbs, I was attempting to discuss the issue at hand. I guess that's pointless with you around and in a mood.

Leaving the thread now, I can see where this is going.

Since someone mentioned it, the whole crusades thing:

Isn't having a war over religion kind of like fighting over who's imaginary friend is better?

That's the whole point, so was i.

I was discussing exactly the point at hand, you just didn't like it.

Talk about a mood...

You're the one who wasn't discussing what the pope said, but about how the church is f*cking up the country.
