Had a conversation the other day that with someone who was spouting about the the state of british music, about how the growth of manufactured bands was killing music, and how it was all a ploy to exploit / rip off kids hard earned pocket money.... What really made me chuckle was the fact the was wearing a slip knot T shirt.... themselves a "manufactured" band :)

My ethos for music is like what you like, music taste is a very personal thing and it should be each to thier own. If you like Will's single buy it, if not <shrug> why worry about it :)

I'll be buying it, and I haven't bought a single in years.

What with you teenyboppers and your "music". I remember in my day we had proper music, stuff you could hum along to! I remember when all this were nowt but fields. Jumpers for goalposts, eh? Where did I put me teeth...

No offence intended, but that is my number one bitch about peoples attitude to music.
What COMES OUT of the business (ie. the music and how it sounds) is indeed down to personal preference, but what GOES IN can often be very different. If I were to say "N'Sync suck!", then it wouldn't relate to the music they release (as some people genuinely like that kind of stuff), but because of the fact they're doing it all for the fame and the chart success, and have a seperate team of talented producers working for them, instead of crafting the music themselves.

Basically, the pop music issue isn't based 100% around personal opinion - and it greatly annoys me when people think it comes down to the level of comparing apples and oranges...

Pop Idol is an complete and utter brain-wave - just when you thought that marketing had shot its bolt with regards to this sort of televisual anathema with "Pop Star(s)".

I guess calling it "Pop Star" would have set people thinking along the lines of cows and the overmilking thereof.

"Pop Idol" though, that's TOTALLY different to "Pop Stars" isn't it?

I doff my cap to the marketing geniuses behind both programs - it may be "absolute shit", but it's popular and it'll make the people involved in it a shit load of money.

Who's "absolute shit" now?

:)

No offence take :) healthy debate and all that ....

Maybe I am being too simplistic in my attitude..... lets take for example the new A1 single, caught in the middle. I really like it. Now were I to mention this to my chums in RL then I am sure I would be derided to hell and back.

I dont like the way that A1 are manufactured, they may not have written the tune or words or indeed played any of the instruments, therefore I think what you are saying is that they dont deserve the credit... That i do agree with...

A1 are my sister's favourite band so I end up knowing alot about them whether I like it or not, and they're turning out to be interesting with the step they took on the new single. Their last few albums worth of stuff is mere puppetry from the management behind them, but "Caught in the Middle" was actually recorded by them, with one of the members on the guitar, one on the keyboard, one on the bass, and one on vocals only. They also wrote the song and occasionally perform it live. They still resort to many marketing schemes, like advertising themselves and all that, but they're progressing, which puts them above most other boybands of their type.
My only real gripe with the new tune is that it sounds too similar to Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn".

<open minded mode ="off">

I fucking hate A1

It was blatently plagiarised off a stand up comedian I saw the other night. He mercilessly ripped the piss out of the guy - it was hilarious

Ooh, I confused Suicide121 ... I would say what do I win, but it's not exactly a difficult task these days.

BTW, taking the piss out of people is funny. Just slightly out of order in some cases. Funny when it comes to G.....GGgggg.......him.
