So how do bouncers work then? I could do with learning more about networking :)

My intelligent guess is: You have the host `crazy.subdomaines.your-own-domain.org.uk', pointed to the bouncer server, and somehow you tell the IRC server uses your own domain name, rather than the `actual' domain that your ISP assigns you? Or does the proccess of connecting through a bouncer tell the IRC server what host to use?

Am i nearly right? Or just plain wrong? :(

well:

there's bouncers, and there's vhosts...

there are different types of bouncers, but i'm basically gonna talk about the sort i've used, and indeed, want....

with a bouncer you configure your username/nick etc, password it.... the bouncer is connected to whatever IRC server with your nickname then... it's permanently there, so no one can take it...

you then set up your mirc client to connect to the bouncer not the irc server directly...

and you just use your nickname like normal basically... when you disconnect, your nick stays there, and it's polite to set an away msg etc...

Vhosts... mask your ip... changing your host... to something like

Wolfy@ono.doesn't.really.hate.me.or.at.least.i.hope.he.doesn't.org

bouncers usually have one vhost set up... a couple of people let you choose your own vhost.

questions?

Well, you didn't really answere my question...

So, a bouncer is sort of irc server, that connects to other servers as a client, on your behalf, then when you connect to it, you assume one of its identities?

Well, how does does the bouncer get its hostname from? Ok, so you have the hostname pointing to the bouncer, but then what?

well, you need to register a domain, once you have a domain you configure your bouncer with it...

e.g.

tele.fragged.org

fragged.org is a registered domain, and tele.fragged.org is a sub-domain (i think i've got this right, someone fill me in if i'm dicking it yeh?)

jawohl?

correct wolfy.
example: I own alphanor.org so I can do subs for it till I drop [in theory]. tdc.lives.on.a.planet.called.alphanor.org sounds nice :)
