I have started playing poker online for real money this week as opposed to play money. Anyways, today alone I have won 2 tournaments and £40. I have been playing properly for exactly 3 days(since Sunday). I came second in the first tournament and won £30.

Now, I have a friend who wins regular and he says its 90% skill and 10% luck. I on the other hand say its 60% luck 30% balls and 10% skill.

How can I win twice today, twice yesterday and come second on my first game if its skill?

Is it beginners luck or am I better than I think I am?

I basically go all in if my back is against the ropes, thats my strategy. That and try and hold in there until people start dropping out.

I do absolutely love the game though.

to be totally honest it is skill to keep up the winning, you look at the tournaments that are held for big money the same people are competing in the finals for the cash, Although Luck can and will play apart in it, it is how you play the cards to maximize your winnings.

I started playing before christmas on Pacificpoker.com I have since borrowed a book from a friend written by some poker champion. There is some very nice stuff in the book about tactis and working out the odds of you winning the hand. At the end of the day anyone can win but the true players win more by playing less hands.

When I play with play money its on pokerroom.com but I have been playing on William Hill for the real money. No reason for that choice its just that is where my mate plays so I kinda just followed him there.

By the way this mate of mine is 19 at uni and wins roughly 90-100 a day playing online poker.

In the news the other day there was a kid (16yrs old I think) that had been playing poker online and had won approx £500,000 in 1 year!!

Worth while if you have the skill.

And yes I do believe there is a large amount of skill involved especially when you get out of the beginners circle.

As a regular poker player for many years; you can't win if you don't have the cards :), therefore it's luck on who gets what cards - so I say luck.

However, lets say your luck runs out and you have to bluff on a series of shit hands - that's when it's skill. You need to see your opponents betting habits, see what he folds on, see if he's bluffing, see what he raises high on etc.

I don't know how you can play online, i need to see my opponents face.

It also depends on what game you're playing. I tend to win mostly at Texas Hold 'Em and Omaha because I know what's a good hand to start with and I can usually force a fold early on and scoop antes. My mates tend not to know what's good/bad at that game, being mostly draw poker players; so it's skilled from that perspective.

If you're all equally skilled at poker, then it's the luck of the draw that wins it.

Ahh you see Big G that was a point I made. I totally agree that its skill when playing in real life(well more than luck anyways). I did say that the online side of it is more luck than skill.

Oh, since I made this thread I have lost 2 tourneys, but the last one was cuz I went all in because my tea was done :D

I'd say that by removing the physical element then it's luck. Laws of averages suggest you're bound to win some, lose some.

I can go a couple of weeks and get fuck all hands, losing badly; but last weekend I had four of a kind followed by a straight flush followed by five aces (wild cards, highest hand).

F'cking great game though. :D

I'll basically echo what Big G said really, other than that my advice from bad experience would be along the lines of play from a set account, ie put XX amount into a fresh poker bank account, whatever you are going to do, play from that (afford to lose) account. Ive had massive wins before, won a 500 player freeroll recently - grr, blah blah. But im basically trying to quit now, other than playing with petit cash. If i had the sense (being drunk is a KILLER), id play from a set poker bank account to limit myself. As i said before i echo Big G's sentiments, but other than that, you can play that way, and still get stiffed 100 hands in a row, just by internet hand (random) shuffling, its the way it goes, hence the limit account thing. Done well before, been majorly stung before, the limit option is my best advice - wish i would use it occasionally.

If possible, could do with a free poker game here at Freddies? See who really does have the skill/luck? :)

If it was all down to luck then how do people win to move to the next level? They have to keep winning over a long period of time. If it was all down to luck then that would not happen.

You have to know how to play a bad hand etc in order to get through. And that is called skill.

When i'm down loads of cash, i play ballsy bets.

Lets say, im on a loser for sure, im on the short stacks - when the antes get high towards the end of the night, go all in (regardless of hand) - it's amazing watching the chip leaders pussy out whilst you scoop up the ante's.

My mates even accuse me of bad form as a result.

Who knows, you might have a shit hot hand, go all in and it pays off and you double your money.

Ahhh... poker.

Trem, I did almost exactly the same as you on Sunday, after a mate said about playing on William Hill. That's kind of freaky.

Anyway, been working 16 hours a day till tonight, so that has prevented me playing again.

On sunday I played tournaments too, as it's only £1.20 for almost an hours fun in my experience so far. I think I've won 2 games, 2 3rd places and a couple of dropping out's early. On balance I'm up, but at a quid or so a go, I don't really care that much.

It seems that the better players laugh at tournament poker, and only see it as a bit of a diversion, but at a quid a hand minimum on the proper tables, I'm not that interested in branching out just yet. I really need an online poker place with 10cents betting to learn about that side of it.

Lot's of fun though.

Thats how i got into it. A friend invited me into Pacific poker he got money for inviting me, I got new members bonus cash on what you put into your account.

Nice to be able to play 40 hands or so for a couple of dollars.
