tbh, poker is a game of chance... and as you know the basic's(ie what beats what ect) theres nothing we can really tell you.

you just gotta know when to bluff and when not to.

also, you need to learn the probability that a card you need will appear in the 5 cards the dealer will pull(not sure of the name for it)

and imo, you will only learn this with experience... unless your up for some hardcore maths talk:p
though, im not really a poker player, i watch it on late night telly and understand what happens in the game... so take this with a pinch of salt:p

Where to begin!

Starting hands i play are normally...

AA, AK, AQ, QQ, KK, JJ, AJ, KQ, KJ, K10, QJ, Q10, J10, suited some offsuit or 78 suited 56suited 910suited.

It all depends on what comes on the flop (first 3 cards) and if you have the best hand. Poker is about reading peoples betting patterns and knowing if you have a better hand than them.

Online is a fikle whore, one thing I would suggest is not bluffing at all, only play your premium starting hands and then playing them aggressivly. Bluffing quite frankly hardly ever works on the low limit tables. Do not bluff untill you have been playing a long while. Another tip I can give you is lay down those KK if an ace hits the flop and you get a good sized bet from someone else. A lot of people online play suited aces or rag aces (like A6, A4) etc. if there are a few people in the pot when your KK meets an ace of the flop there is a good chance someone has hit it. Always play tight poker and play agressivly when you get good hands. Don't be affraid of putting half the pot out to see if anyone is beating your mid pair. Check out numourous websites and buy a book about online poker from amazon, you'll need to read up on it.

ye tbh gamah got most of it right there ..
what i like to do in poker is build a good rep on the table asap .. so later u can bluff if needed. basically i love to slow play and imo i do it really well, so i build a good rep like that .. get a guy to throw money at me, i just call him, check etc .. then (if i know the guy will raise i also check on the river :p) make sure u can get as much money on the river as possible .. after winning the hand peeps know u bet big with a v nice hand. do it a few times and be the chip leader (or 1 of them) and u can buy pots easily if needed.

playin online is easy, tbh if u can sit out like 3-4 hands at 1st just to watch how peeps bet round the table b4 u start throwing money in it could help ( i like to do it sometimes if some people at the table have a big chip lead ). as gamah said bluffing can be hard online, and i wouldnt try it unless u are already intimidating on the table, however always look at the flop to make sure the other player doesnt have a v good hand and is likely to stay in the hand.

And of course one of the main things u should remember is .. Dont be afraid to cut ur losses ! if u know he wins or will probably win, fold.

EDIT: And poker books suck :) i never bothered with'em and i seem to alright against my m8s (or in the competitions) who have read all these books .. play the player not the game .. but of course cover ur outs

EDITx2: damn it :) ok last thing, u could use this to practice with, just play the 'pretend' money games and altho u will come across tards that just bet everything 1st hand to try double up even tho they have a 2 and a 5 unsuited, it is still good practice ;)

BEST Advice i think any1 can giv u if your a beginner is.... PLAY FREE POKER TABLES till u get a grasp of the game.No point imo taking £10 to a £1 tale cos it aint gonan last long at all if u dont know what ya doin.

i Personally think A/K Suited is best starting hand cos A/A Can be so easily beaten with 2pair on the flop.

but the starting hands gamah mentioned about are decent starters also.Play your position on the table well.. and as invis said. watch betting patterns etc.online after a few hands u can normally tell what certain people r gonna do before they do it.

also watch for people that rarely call.. if they fold a lot and regular they tend to be patient players waiting for a good hand.. and if they enter a pot and bet big.. fold ya cards.. cos in many instances means he got the cards he been waiting for.. to win a pot with.

also Take into consideration Your kicker...yes u may have A/8 IN HAND and for example A-6-3 FLOP ... THEN 7 ON THE TURN and 2 on the river..
which leaves your hand as A-A-8-7-6 . SO A's with a 8 kicker.. if sum1 across table had A/9 or higher then he would take the pot for having a higher kicker. so always consider them also.

with kickers same if u have a flush... if u got 4 clubs on table and u have a 5 clubs . dont auto think u won.. cos if sum1 has a higher club and same flush then they gonna skin u alive if u dont consider the kicker cards

IMO also ALWAYS respect possible flushes on the table from flop..if for example 3 clubs flop.. odds are sum1 on table has a club or 2!! so will stay in for the possible club they need.

cant be assed saying much else cos tbh most the stuff u learn as u play.. one thing i can recomend is change your play style regular.

For example if u bluffing a lot and going all in .. or big bets trying scare ppl of the pot... show em your cards after they have folded. they will think "bastard he bluffed" do it a cple of time.. and show em cards.. and when u do eventually get a good hand.. bet big.. and some fucker will think "he is bluffing" when in fact u aint.. he put in all his chips and u double up on him :)

basically not let em know wtf u r upto.. keep em guessing.. taking risks etc. cos if u play the same (ie always raising and betting every hand) people will call u a lot cos u cant have that many good hands .....and u will lose but if u mix it up they wont have a clue and will be easier to possibly scare off the pot.. or bait em into piling the chips in for you to take em.

also if your playing online.. and dont wanna play free games.. Play on Low stakes Single table tourneys. or Low stakes Multi Table tourneys.. as if u pay £1 entry fee u get for example 1500 chips to play with. so they last a lot longer and for more hands than say £10 would on a £1 table , in the MTT u will also get all sorts of players.. newbies... mediocre players. semi pros .. pros etc so u can watch n learn of others also.

fuck ive typed to much.. and i aint even covered a tiny amount of the game. best thing to do is get out there and learn yaself

basics are VERY VERY easy to learn... but becoming good at it and playing your cards well takes a LONG TIME to master.. and tbh i dont think any1 ever has or will master poker! just toooo much to learn.

Advice? Well, don't listen to these guys, i kicked their ass in poker ;)

And still don't have a title...guess that guy who peeked at the forum and got easy money from it got it :(

But, my tips: Don't go all in, you don't need to. Betting pot, or half of it is much more sensible and gets you more cash.

Don't show your cards. Never ever ever. Even if you think you're giving false info, you might be giving the silent killer in the table just the info they need. And they can smell you out.

Look at the chips, if your opponent has 3000 in chips, a bet of 60 won't make him go out. Don't try to force out the chiplead. Nibble nibble. You have time so use it.

About starting hands, i beat gamah with a 72offsuit 'cause it felt like a good hand. I finished first in a tourney 'cause i won around 100k with a 39suited. I got my three jacks beaten by a riverqueen. When cards come and go, you have to trust your gut. You can as easily win with an AK and a 72off, just that the % may be 1 or 2 up with a suited paint. I even threw away an AA once pre-flop because someone went all-in and lucky i did. Floip brought a third ace, but in the end the other guy got a flush.

Play with your guts and trust your guts in play. Guess i can't say it better.

BeKingofPoker (BossMedia cicruit) has a good signup bonus $100 for 100 raked hands at any stakes. Play a couple of tables and its very quick to complete that bonus if you can break even. Software is very good and simple. Main reason is you can make a minimum deposit say $20 and still earn the $100 bonus. And its done on number of hands not amount of rake.

The sign up bonus will be automatically credited into your account as follows: When you have raked your first 250 hands you will be credited with $25 and when you've raked a further 750 hands you will receive the remaining $75.

After you've done that move to Full Tilt or Pokerstars to take advantage of american fish, who won't be on partypoker anymore due to the recent legislation. At $300-400 roll then move to Titan Poker and play on their $0.1/$0.2 tables before moving up $0.12/$0.25.

Most important read: Small Stakes Hold em - David Sklansky
The definitive guide to crushing loose games and amateur opponents

and Little Green Book - Phill Gordon

and have a look at some posts on 2+2 Micro Stakes Forum

From looking at your screenshot I think you've started in way too high stakes?, switch down to $0.05/$0.10 to build your roll.

Good luck and don't go broke on top pair. Most important dont bluff or try too much sneaky/trappy play as your opponents won't know what hand you are representing. Play like a nit and very tight, especially in your choice of starting hands, suited connectors, pocket pairs etc. Play only premium hands in early position and looser in late position.

Try and read each time before you start playing.

One of the things that I do when I play online at a table, beside knowing what hands to play and not, is to make a strat, it is easy to do this and confuse enemies a lot.

Okay, first you take the good starting hands and divide them up in some stacks (lowest number is the greatest hands)

1: AA, AKs, KK, KQs, QJS, QQ, JJ
2: J+10s, 10+9s, 10's, 9's, 8's, 7's
3: AK, AQ, AJ, KQ, KJ, QJ
4: A-J+any suit, 6's, 5's, 4's, 3's, 2's
4: Crap cards

Okay, safe play: Go on 1 and 2 only, 3 if you are small blind
If more riski (can be more rewarding) go on 1-3 and 4 if you are small blind

Now, the strat!

If you are on a 2 or 3, ALWAYS JUST CALL! never raise, just call!
On a 1, CALL, always, UNLESS that you have called once and it was RAISED after you called, then RE-RAISE the SHIT out of him!, with 1 hand, you can do this

This is all pre-flop, after the flop, go with you guts, you should know if you are getting your worth (Dont call a raise on a A+Ksuit, if you got no pair and only 1 on the flop of same suit, it is THE SHIT to play then!)

Sit at a LOW rate NoLimit table, small blinds is your friend until you build a good bank!

EDIT:
Of course I forgot the most confusing part, the TAUNT call, now, you been sitting at the same table with the same guys for a while, like 30 minuts, they are getting to know your style, you will notice how they often FOLD the moment you RE-RAISE them, now milk the gits, once every 4th or 5th round, RE-RAISE even on a 2 or 3, perhaps even on a 4 if you feel like it, make them pay up!

My advice - don't listen to other people's advice on how to play hands - learn the game, learn how you like to play - some people like to be naturally agressive , some like to sit and play tight, some play somewhere in between, the better players (imo) switch between all styles - play one style for an hour - once people get an idea of how you are playing - switch to another style to keep them confused - but again thats my opinion.

Best book I have read - Phil Hellmuths Play Poke Like The Pro's - also on that link is the Doyle Brunson super system book - considered the original classic of poker guides..

Learn your own style - play in the cheapest room available on the site (or free tables if you are only learning). Dont ever expect to end every session up - anyone who says they do is a liar :)

Watch poker programs on Challenge/Bravo etc (if you are in the UK) - you will see different types of play - Mentalists like Mike Mattasow (sp?) and Gus Hansen to your more stable players like Phil Ivey etc..

There is no definative guide other than it helps to have an understanding of maths - working out pot odds / hand percentages etc..

Most of all - never ever ever play if you are not in the mood or if you are pissed off etc - lot easier to go on tilt then.
