...can still explode in your face several minutes after you've microwaved them.

Egg and my face were in alignment.

Sorry no pics this time but it was quite hard to see through the large pieces of yolk stuck to my glasses.

Also this was just mere moments after I was giving Lou a big speech about how you have to leave it in the microwave for about a minute after it's cooked to prevent any explosions.

The worst part is, by the time I cleaned it all up off my glasses, myself and the walls, what was left of the egg had gone cold. :(

I think you and damini should carry digicams around your necks to capture all these moments for us :)

BTW, soft boiled is the only way to eat eggs.

Same goes for drinks heated in the microwave, we used to see this kind of thing a lot with industrial microwaves in commercial kitchens.

It heats them from the inside ******ds, so occasionally you can get a very hot area inside a cooler one, stick a cold spoon into the liquid through the colder outer area into the boiling inner area and it can errupt slightly.

You'd be blind if you hadn't been wearing your glasses. Real blind.

Honestly didn't know you could do them in the microwave, I allways assumed you had to do them in boiling water on a stove thingy. Hmm.. lol though :(

Noticing a trend here, mostly the amount of everyday tribulations and mishaps that our WPKenny (and Lou of course) are having.
Therefore, I think he needs a new nickname to suit, one that will suit someone who's constantly making everyone else here laugh at his expense ;)

So, Sideshow Kenny?
Kalamity Kenny?

Easiest way to poach imo is:

Saucepan with about an inch of water brought to a gentle simmer.

Crack eggs into water

Continue to gentle simmer for 2 mins.

Remove from heat.

Leave in water for 10 mins

Serve, Perfect poached eggs everytime.

How can they be perfect if they've been in hot water for 10 minutes? The yolk will be solid - you may as well hard boil the buggers there...

...unless you're one of these puffs that are scared of a bit of runny egg. Like babies and octogenarians :)

Nope they are nice and runny. Not a solid bit of yolk to be had. You need to use large eggs though smaller eggs cut down the time on the hob and remember the 2 minutes on the hob is a gentle simmer not a boil.

Thanks Jup,

It takes a while but it really is the hassle free way of getting a decent poached egg.

... and we all know, without a doubt, that poached is THE single best way to have eggs cooked :)

This is so true :)

Only thing I would add to Rubric's technique is before you crack the egg into the water, give it a good stir and get a little whirlpool going, it pulls the egg more together when it's dropped in.

  • Get some microwaveable clingfilm
  • Get a cup
  • Push the cling film into the cup and rub some butter/marg onto it so the egg doesn't stick
  • Crack the egg into the cling film
  • Make a pouch out of the cling film
  • Drop into boiling water, and poach normally, it'll taste great, and you wont have to spend ages scrubbing cooked on egg of the damn pan.
Tried and tested by me countless times. this method CANNOT be beaten. It is perfect.

I found it ages ago here: B3TA : FEATURES : HOW TO POACH AN EGG

Scroll to very bottom. I've modified the method a little.

Why does it have to be microwavable clingfilm if you arent putting it in the microwave? :(

I suspect that since some makes/types of cling film aren't microwave proof they must have heat issues so sticking them in boiling water isn't a good idea.
