God. The PS2 has only just come out and now Sony are discussing plans for Playstation 3! At this rate, when i'm about 70 we'll be on Playstation 54!

They were talking about it before they even released the PS2 in this country :)

Only because they know the XBox is going to piss all ove the ps2 from the greatest of heights.

Watch them team up with ATi to provide their graphics processor.

I doubt ATI will be getting a phone call from Sony. PS3 is too far developed anyway. XBox will not be that much better than PS2 but the games will probably take a lot less time to develop than on the PS2.

PS2s are still pants by the way. I'm thinking of upgrading mine to a proper DVD player :D

Yeah but PS2 is getting better. It's got a few quality games like SSX, Zone Of the Enders and Quake 3. Half-Life is on the way too. But it couldn't match up to the PC version :)

No no no.
PS2s are utter shite.

But, Metal Gear Solid 2.

As much as I hate pissing on Perp's fire (you know I love you really), but X-Box is shaping up to be 3do mark 2. It will probably flop quicker aswell. Main reason? Japan doesnt give a fuck about it. Thats Japanese customers AND developers. Want some quotes about it?

"I don't think Xbox is that much better than PlayStation 2, other then slightly better graphics" - Hideo Kojima, director of Metal Gear Solid

"I wont say that Xbox has no chance. It has a slight chance, but it is a very tiny opportunity" - vice-president of Capcom

there are many many more out there, showing the general apathy in the console market towards Xbox. It's only PC owners who give two shits about it, and we all know how well PC games sell these days dont we.......

The launch lineup looks horrible (some games looking worse than PS2 equivalents), the control pads are a joke, its 20 times too big and the chances of really good CONSOLE games coming out on it without the Japanese developer support looks pretty small. Microsoft's first commercial failure? It's looking that way.......

"but it will have Abe's Oddysey 3!!!!!" Hold me back....

P.S You're right PS3 wont have an ATi chip in it, seeing as Flipper, the GPU in Gamecube is being manufactured by ATi.....

Yeah I think Xbox will be a let down too.

I think PS2 Vs Xbox will be the equivalent of PS1 Vs N64

And as for Gamecube, Gngh...

Time will tell (lamer). MS have never failed to this day, ever. Anything they've produced has been a commercial/financial success

Are you guys all forgetting Bill's bid to own the internet by starting MSN. Only when he saw he had no bloody chance of actually OWNING the majority of the internet did he open the company up into something different.

Yeh, that was dumb as dirt :D

The nasty thing they're doing now though is the signed drivers idea in WinXP. Unless a company makes they're drivers exactly how M$ wants em (favouring their software maybe ?) then users get dire warnings that these drivers will probably cause an explosion or something. The companies Tech Support line gets flooded. Bad news. Company decides it's easier to do things as M$ likes :(

Bomb Redmond (or just whinge a bit at home... whichever) !!!

Dont know about x-box, the majority on console companies to date have been based in the far-east, the japanese market was their home market. X-box is different, who gives two shits if japan likes it? If America (very likely) and Europe embrace it it will succeed. Look at the Dreamcast, it sold well in japan, that did not ensure its survival or success.

Currently the PS2 is the best console out there. The X-Box is going to be a very interesting commercial venture imo. For a start, it would appear the third party developers are not at all happy with the development kits (Suprisingly, they are raving about the Gamecube's kits!) - which could lead to an N64 style situation of 1st-party games only (Which could be good in a way, as 90% of the N64's 1st and 2nd party games were actually superb).
On the otherhand, MS could use a fantastic marketing campaign a-la PSX to stir public interest in an otherwise inferior machine (not hardware wise). I have to say that the PS2 marketing machine seems to be a bit non-existent, that coupled with the botched launch could be a bit of a problem.

IMO the Gamecube is going to be the unlikely successor in this generation war, as the games I have seen and the large launch title list (mostly 3rd party for a change!) have all been incredibly impressive. Add to that the 1st and 2nd party games they own (ZELDA! MARIO! PERFECT DARK!! OMG!!!!) they could pull of a bit of a coup!

Clearly not. The DreamCast is still way ahead of the PS2. I know this won't be for much longer, but it has a huge array of VERY good games, and the DC itself is actually a very good system.

The only reason it's "failed" is because of the general public's belief that anything new and following in the footsteps of the PSX is automatically better, without having actually seen the machine in action.

*sigh*
:(

I love my DC.

Actually, having played on a DC myself and on several different games, I must say I subscribe to the 'Dreampants' group of gamers.

I truly think that console is a big pile-of-shite :)

Apart from Crazy Taxi, but one game isn't worth a console.

Remember, A console's not just for Xmas - its for life!

DC games 0wn PS2 games still. Far too many good titles on DC. Fook all on PS2. Sure, there'll be MGS2 *one* day but that's hardly a reason to rave about the machine now.

If only ppl would realise that the specs of a machine are not that important and just cos something can do 90 trillion triangles (as long as they dont get drawn on the screen, or whatever other theoretical limitation they wanna use to make the numbers bigger) does not mean their life will be improved and that an EA Sports or Acclaim game will suddenly become playable.

Just cos the numbers for XBox are a bit bigger does not make it a better machine even. Never mind meaning that it will have any good games. Anyone who even entertains the idea that "Machine A 0wns Machine B" needs a good kicking around the head for unspeakable stupidity.

It's all about the games and out of the current games on the market now (who cares about those in 2 years time) DC games 0wn all others.

End of Lecture !

Errrrmmmm, that's bullshit. Do you actually know anyone first hand using the XBox devit? No? Guess what....I do. My mate works at Argonaut on the Malice game (one of the xbox launch titles in case you've been living under a rock for the past year) and apparantly the devkit pisses **all** over the ps2 devkit. It is a "joy to work with" are the exact words spouted.

Having said that, they haven't got any of the Gamecube devkits in yet, but Nintendo have fucked themselves for going with ANOTHER gay proprietary media format, in my humble opinion.

There's no point in praising or dissing any machine ahead of release. You just don't know what's gonna happen, which games will be good, how long it will last etc. Just appreciate what's around now and don't get stressed about the future d00ds :)

I'm still of the opinion that DC sucks wet butt :) Seriously, all of the games I've played (with the notable exception of Crazy Taxi) were lacking something....oh yes thats right - a fun factor!!

I'll agree with you that PS2's software is just a tad thin on the ground, but most of what they've got out is half decent (The half decent game was the mainstay of the original PSX) and that Starfighter game is rather tasty!! And this is coming from a seasoned Gaystation basher.

As for X-Box dev kits, maybe they do piss on PS2 kits but from what I've heard, the Gamecube kits really are the Knees of Bees. Plus they have Sega and Namco making some tasty games for the Gamecube.

As for the Gamecube format - I've been pondering that lately as well. It does strike me that going with Mini-DVD is a bit weird, as you can't watch DVD movies - but who the hell watches DVD's through the PS2? The player is pants!
The Mini-DVD format may be there to hinder the prolific games pirating that occurs (90% of games played are not bought over the counter), maybe giving them a theoretically higher profit from each game sold.

I'm just waiting for someone to come into the thread and say "Consoles suck. PC games rule!" Boy would that be fun :)

As a fighting game fan Sega machines have pandered pandered to my (nearly) every whim. PSX sucked at 2d. Saturn rocked. Saturn had VF2 and Fighters Megamix, which easy made up for the lack of Tekken (I had a PSX anyway, I'm speaking in comparitive terms, not about my experience.) There's some incredible fighters on DC (SFZ3, SF3, GGX, SC, VOOT.) PS2 has TTT and that's all that's worth playing.

At least for Fighters will everyone agree that DC games 0wn all ? :D

Ah, i forgot Shenmue. Yes that game is a bit tasty :)

As for fighters, well TBH im not a big fan of the genre anymore. This is gonna sound plain stupid but 3d fighters just don't have the feel of Street Fighter II!!!! Hehehe.

Actually, I don't like Tekken at all. Never have. Nor did I like the Virtua Fighter series. In fact Battle Arena Toshinden was my fave :)

I haven't played TTT on the PS2, but I've been told it's quite tasty.

Actually, theres a question - when you buy a console, what genre of game do you buy it for? For instance, when I buy consoles I buy them for the RPG's, Platformers and shoot-em ups (not FPS's), as opposed to the RTS, FPS and God-type sim games when I buy PC's.

Interesting how different machines seem to be inherently better at some sorts of games (there are notable exceptions - Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and GT as examples). Wonder why that is?

I buy consoles mainly for fighters (DC all the way remember) and RPGs. The PSX still has the best selection of RPGs. The Saturn had quite a few good ones (Shining the Holy Ark and Panzer Dragoon Saga spring to mind) and the DC has a few (Grandia 2 and Phantasy Star Online if you count that as RPG) but PSX (1) is still best. PS2 has nothing worth a toss and for some reason I never much liked Zelda on N64. I'm in a minority I think there.

Anyway, flogging this point to death now; DC has a variety of great games of different styles as well like Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis and RE: Code Veronica. Who cares if another machine pushes more polys and shades more vertices ? :D

Umm the 3DO did allright in japan if i remember right, just a shame the console was crap, and the mighty playstation was around the corner:) That even crippled a good console in the saturn. I too payed over 400 quid for a 3DO:( But hey the playstation was made the cool thing to have, im sure this was all to do with it's orginal colour 'white' the dance crazy at the time and a certain game called wipeout:)

Hush Kryten. Adults talking.

Tekken is the be all and end all of fighting games. It was the only reason I bought a PS2 when I did. Soul Calibur is ok, but its Tekken with weapons and a shit control pad. Whoop :(

TTT is good but I prefer Soul Calibur for some reason. Maybe it's the deflecting weapons stuff or just the fun of big weapons :D

Bodhi: Microsoft's first commercial failure?
no, not the first :)
Perplex: MS have never failed to this day
depends how one defines 'failure' heh :)

Wij: the signed drivers idea
other ms stuff too :(, forcing ppl is something ms knows how to do quite well unfortunatly. I see their point, but it isn't 'nice'

actually I shouldn't be commenting as my thoughts are stated here: http://forums.barrysworld.com/showthread.php?threadid=8798
