I think Sony might release a new version in europe with BC after christmas. I saw on a XBox forum a guy that thinks removing the 60gb was just a trick to get sales up pre christmas. If its true and a new one comes out it is lame.

A friend of mine came a car journey away from buying a PS3 at the weekend after we watched some crap TV show that featured "Haze" (i nearly wet my pants at it) he didn't bother though because he couldn't get the 60 gig version. All Sony have done is make some ebayers a few extra quid and shot themselves in the foot over sales for Christmas.

Well of course they want to get sales up at christmas its the most profitable time of year and if by releasing a lower priced unit is going to help them achieve higher sales then its a no brainer really, its not really a trick.

But why not give customers the choice of the 2 systems? imo this is where Microsoft come in first place yet again.

A choice of 3 systems each cheaper then the PS3 no BC is just retarded.

But it is not working.

Before they anounced there were loads of stock in the UK now theres not much from Sony point of view they shifted all the machines they were sat of shelves so that worked. If they wanted a sales boost they got it.

I would not say there were loads and loads, they would have sold at xmas regardless. The problem they have created is that no one wants the 40gb model and now they are sitting on shelves.

I think you over estimate the desire to have ps2 backwards compatability in the vast majority of consumers, of course on a game forum people will be wanting it but your average person probably wont really be bothered, not that I care either way I've had my 60gb PS3 for a while now :)

I'm not talking about people on here, I am talking about joe public walking into my store and wanting backwards compatibility. There is only a £50 price difference and the 60gb came with two games, it is better value in their eyes.

Pretty much what Chet said, Sony slashed the price of the 60gb version thus creating an incredibly priced bundle. If you manage to find a 60gb PS3 anywhere now you are a very lucky person but the 40gb will shift in numbers as well as it will capture the non-sony users who are not interested in SACD, PS2 or 4 USB ports but want a pretty decent blu-ray player that also streams and plays games.

Indeed, the first place prize for releasing multiple unnecessary versions of exactly the same product goes to Microsoft. The Wii strikes again with the uber simple, make each one the fucking same.

Backwards Compatibility is retarded in a lot of ways. Sony's current problem imho is that went with BC heavy on PS2 and now it's a shambles on PS3. Perhaps if they spent less time clamping down on the coding scenes for PSP and PS3 they'd find some people out there willing to create and distribute better emulators for backwards compatibility games.

Nintendo have done well in this round because they got the shit kicked out of them with the Gamecube and they learned quite nicely from the mistakes.

Sony tried to make the PS3 too many things and it's suffering as a result. With all the revisions it feels like watching Sega back in the day when it was churning out things like the MegaCD, 32x, Virtua Racing cartridge, Plug through cartridge.

MS are doing ok, but could be doing better. The revisions released are piss poor and pointless in most ways (almost like the Vista variations where business and home would have been quite enough).

Anyway, back on topic. Don't help Wij, just ruin his crimbo! ;)

The question of which PS3 bundle to get is a tricky one indeed. Im not in a market for one just now but i may want one down the road (having just bought a HD-ready tv i may want a machine to play HD movies eventually, and when FF13 comes out it may be irresistable etc). Im hoping there will be some other options available when/if i buy one because neither of the curren bundles really appeal to me - the 60gig is great value i suppose, if you want the games and need an extra controler, which i dont (i have 2 controlers for my 360, they have been used simultanously twice in a year). The 40gig has a decent price but doesnt have BC which i want, never having owned a PS2 but wanting to play some of the games (like God of War, FF9-12 etc). I hope there will be a plain option of a console with BC, one controler and no bundled games (or a game i do want), for a good price, when i decide its time for some HD action.

Doesn't work. You have to collect from store and all the stores are out of stock. :(

It was in stock for Home Delivery yesterday morning but they had adverts on tv all day saying they had stock :(

PS3 with 80GB Hard Drive and Motorstorm $489
Freddyshouse.com

It would be a nightmare to get fixed under warranty, you'd get charged VAT if you imported it and they don't do international delivery, but if they did it would cost a fortune. Meh.

Well done replying to a spam bot.
That link looks like it has a referral ID in it so it's trying to make money off whoever buys from his link.
