Now the format war has ended with Blu-Ray winning I am thinking of getting a BR player.

My biggest issue is that only 1 or 2 play divx as well as the other formats, I get a lot of stuff on divx so it is important to me, the fact that they are not the best quality sometimes doesn't mean a hell of a lot.

I have read that the PS3 now lets you play divx, is this true? Could I put say 5 films on 1 dvd and watch them on the PS3? Is the BR playback on them as good as a stand alone player?

For the money I may as well get a PS3 if it can do the above well, but I will not be playing games on it, well maybe 1 or 2 if any take my fancy but this will not be its main use.

Any help appreciated luvs.

The PS3 does indeed play divx from burnt DVDs. You can also stream to the PS3 by using TVersity of something similar.

The BlueRay player has just been updated to support BD2.0(?) which is the latest version of BlueRay and allows for Picture in Picture and Web Enabled Content. Basically, everything that HD DVD did out of the box ;)

Now we just have to wait for some BlueRay films to be released that have these features.

For the price, the PS3 is easily the best BlueRay player you can buy on the market at the moment.

I'm actually tempted to get a second one for downstairs :)

Cheers Whipped a couple more questions -

Does it play divx out of the box or is it by way of an update? Are PS3 wired or wireless as regards to connecting to the net?

You need to do the firmware updates to get it playback divx files (I think it was 2.20 that brought that feature in). I play back .avi files all the time - I tend to run them straight off a memory stick, works fine.

Oh, and wired or wireless - either is fine.

Cheers DaG, one more question -

Is the 40gb version wireless out of the box or does it need an add on like the Xbox 360, is it worth the extra money to go for the 60gb version that has 4 USB ports and is wireless out the box?

I ask here because the sites that sell them are pretty vague.

I think the 40 has wireless but has not got Memory Card readers or Backward compatibility. According to most people the PS3 is a better player than standalone as it keeps getting new features added for free.

40Gb has wireless. Only thr 20Gb (not seen in Europe) didn't have it.

IF you can get a 60Gb (should be pretty difficult..), your decision is basically:

Do I want PS2 backwards compatibility?

Yes --> 60Gb
No --> 40Gb

I don't need that, I have no PS2 games.

They have loads of the 60gb on Amazon.

I have ordered the 40gb GT model.

Thanks for your help luvs.

The 60gbs on amazon are all market sellers though afaik - so you'll be paying quite a premium on it. What I wanna know is when is a ps3 coming out with the dualshock, the standard non vibrating ps3 bad feels so cheap and tacky :\

Japan got a new bundle wih it as soon as it was out im not sure when the UK release is but i would think the six axis will be removed as soon as it is.

Looks like April should be release for the UK and a MGS Pack will come complete in June :)

I imported a Dual Shock from a website someone on here gave me. It actually cost the same as a normal controller does from the shop and only took a few days to arrive.

Trem you own a divx playing 360 ;)

Hang on awhile and get one of these

Samsung announces 4th generation Blu-ray player at CD Freaks.com

The Sony marketing hype team have done a great job selling the ps3 as the best bluray player on earth even tho up until last week it wouldnt output DTS-HD.

I sold it a while back, I didn't want to but Marks died and he wanted mine so I sold it.

But I think I would want a PS3 even if I still had the 360, I want more a media centre than a console and I am hoping the PS3 will do that, plus I do want Blu-Ray.

Its sat in my front room all boxed up, can't wait until I wake up properly, still on France time so I'm up bloody early :(

erm why? I own a ps3 and a 360. why should trem get the overpriced samsung player when the ps3 does the same and more via firmware upgrades?

The Samsung is a similar price as the ps3 and upgradeable via firmware

I still do not get it though bob, do you work for samsung? So a similar price to the ps3, but it offers nothing near what the ps3 does except in terms of blu-ray. Why would you bother?

I had this same discussion with my mate the other day. He wants a blu-ray player. I tell him to get a ps3, he says he does not want a console, and then starts looking at the samsung stuff. "The ps3 can't be anygood, it's not just a blu-ray player" Seems to be his general belief.

Bob doesn't hate PS3 and you can understand people being wary of the PS3 in terms of film playback after the shocking quality of the PS2 playback.

As well as on here I have searched around and pretty much everyone says the PS3 is the one to get if you want a BR player now.

I have connected it but not turned it on yet, saving it for later when I'm alone, sort of like my first wank in a week.

I've nothing against ps3 and i'll probably get one later in the year once the psn is improved and a bigger selection of games become available.

I also don't work for Samsung.

Just my opinion.

Trem buys, gets bored and sells gadgets pretty quickly so maybe i'll pick his up cheaply :)

Guys,

The problem with any standalone BR player is that the java experience will be shit in comparison as they just won't put the processing power in the box. Go get any player, insert disc, wait for over 30 seconds, repeat using PS3, wait between 5-10 seconds.

I've not yet actually seen a BR movie on my PS3 yet, so I cna't comment on that, but I just use the controller when watching a DVD or stream from my PC and that works fine (though it looks a bit silly). In terms of playback, afaict the PS3 matches or outclasses my previous DVD player.

I bought the official PS3 BR remote and it works great and all, is cool how you don't have to aim but inall honesty, most of the time i watch a film i just use a normal ps3 control. Once you know what buttons do what its no different since it's wireless and is usually to hand, where as for example, i have no idea where my BR remote is right now ;)

peeps think the ps3 is shit for bluray playback is partly coz the ps2 was naff at dvd playback. and partly coz AV press are doing articles which are very much BS saying the pic quality is poor compared to current/up coming blue ray players, of course they gotta keep the peeps who butter their bread happy

as for the BR remote, its great but i find my self pointing towards the ps3 to play/pause/stop etc. its not an IR remote and i end up feeling like noob!

Ok its all set up and I very briefly tried a divx in it which played. How do I change the screen size settings, it was playing in a square with borders to the left and right?
