Someone's been playing too much I-War :D

Would be nice, if it can take the stress, but a "horrid spacelift accident shocks world" headline is bound to happen.

I agree, I can see either some major disaster occuring during construction or in the first couple of months! imagine if some space rock or junk burning up in the atmosphere struck the shaft, it could bring the entire thing down!

Acid rain will be a thing of the past, instead you will have miracle grow rain and all new species of fish, animals and plants.

This idea's been floating around for years anyway, think Arthur C Clarke was one of the first to think that some sort of space elevator was theoretically possible and a handy way around having to waste so much thrust getting out of the atmosphere every time.

Cool if someone can put the theory into practice though, one more step towards all the sci-fi books I read becoming reality (Peter Hamilton really can predict the future, itll be crystal storage and downloading of people's memories next)

Dump them in the Sun and hope it doesnt go boom :D

Arthur C Clarke was going on about this for yonks though, yes its theoreticly possible, just like many things, it just hasn't been done yet.

Is it just me, or does it look like there is a death star in the bottom left corner about the asplode the earth?

Oh I'm not worried about the waste in space, it's getting it there in the first place that worries me.

What could happen? If we disregard any technical problem, its not like some foreign object from outer space would crash into it :D

Wouldn't this be built using carbon/nano-rods? I watched some doc about this at 3am about a year ago.

I love 3am television.

Was even better when they had those Open University lectures on, some of the fluffy haired crazy collared boffins just spoke a different language.

what if someone cuts a fart in it just after lift off though? i mean thats bad enough if your only going up a few floors and if its a real hummer you can hit the energency stop button and get out through the roof hatch and play bruce willis for a few minutes...if your going all the way to space and someone lets one rip...you see what im saying here? theres only so long one can hold ones breath and...

in space no one can hear you scream!!!

The lift automatically explodes in the event of any bowel gas being detected, so its in everyone's best interests not to fart. Accordingly, it is illegal to eat a baked bean and prune vindaloo in a space lift.

the lifts would be mini habitats with living quarters not your typical lift think about if its going to take 7 days to get to its destination its gonna be quite roomy

Gimme a xbox, a 20" or so screen, a cumfy chair, eat&drink and whisky and i wouldn't mind if the trip took 7 years
