Planning on getting a new computer as old one is not "new hotness", Busted piece of ...well...comes to mind.

Co-worker is getting rid of this(sort of);

http://eu.shuttle.com/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-546/169_read-749/

And would be willing to get rid of it at about 300e rate.

Also would have 2 gigs of kingston and a Asus EAX 1600 XT gfx card.

Opinions? Worth it? Upgradable over time?

I'm looking for something to run things like fallout 3 and most MMOs at a reasonable(if not good) scale.

So no need to be a crysis-killer :D

Just no. You won't run anything on a Pentium 4 and that graphic card.

Well, things went a bit tits up in any case, seller forgot to mention he doesn't have a dvd or a HD in the machine :lol:

Moron.

I'm going to just take the easy way and get a full pack from the local compshop as always, i'm not on a big budget anyway and i'm nto going to build my own.

Thanks anyway for the replies.

I wouldn't say it's worth it tbh. The price (300 Euros?) seems like a lot of money for what is effectively a 4 year old machine. The motherboard will be limited in terms of it's upgradeability (CPU, RAM etc) and the graphics card is far from optimal.

Have a look around at the barebone deals on Novatech and Overclockers. It will give you an idea of price and spec.

You can basically get something with a far superior, modern spec of about the same money. It will also give you a better upgrade path (e.g. more modern motherboard) than what the PC your colleague is trying to flog.

It really is quite straight-forward and will save you some money. At the risk of sounding like I'm promoting Novatech, they do even provide a guide to building the barebones machines.

If you don't want to go for a barebones machine, then there's plenty of pre-built systems available fairly cheaply, but again, you might pay slightly more for these.

Oh. Well it was just like pointers to what sort of system you should be aiming for.

Do you really work in gaming? :eek:

Nope, none.

Knowing about computers(besides maybe some minor) isn't at all necessary in what i do. Believe it or not, unless you're coding :D

fettoken i appreciate it, but i found a rather nice 'puter in a nice range(i'm at a 500-700 budget) and it's a full set so i dno't ave to mess around with it.

Need a computer that's full on ready to go, no time to tinker around at this stage.

The one that's going on order on monday'ish is this;

* AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.6GHz
* Mem: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
* GFX: ATI Radeon HD4650 1GB
* HD: 750GB 7200rpm SATA
* DVD+/-RW, double layer, LS
* Internal 7:1
* Fast Ethernet
* 15-in-1 memcard
* 6x USB 2.0 (2 front), 1x FireWire
* 3x PCI Express 1x, 1x PCI Express 16x
* Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit FIN/SWE/ENG

That's a 600 set, I might fork in another 100e for a faster model with a 6gb mem, but that would limit upgrading the gfx card and especially limit my monitor options.

The 100e costier thingy is basically same except;

AMD Phenom II X3 425
6GB DDR3 1066MHz
ATI Radeon HD4650 1GB
1TB 7200rpm SATA
DVD+/-RW, double layer, LS

I think most bang for the back would be add a little bit for a better gfx card. Something like a 4750 or 4770 shouldn't be that expensive? Especially if you wanna play games.

Yeah, that's why i was going for thr 600e one. Little less juice, but can upgrade to a way better GFX.

Even if that GFX card is "enough", compared to the comp i'm using for gaming now it's better.

Can't you do a straight swap in the store? Throw in some money and get a 4750 instead of the 4650?

The store is a bit bitchy at that, charges a minute-price for modifications.

So it's cheaper to just buy a new one and fit it in myself when i do.

Minute price shouldn't be that expensive, takes 1-2 min to change it? ;)
Then again, if i was charged by the minute it would take a lot longer!

The more expensive of those options is worse. Go with the first one and get a proper card, I'd say you should splurge and go for atleast a 4850(It's really not that expensive, and knowing from personal experience it's rock solid performance wise).

edit: by splurge I mean spend €5 extra compared to the 4770.
