Planetside for free, worth a try?

Subscription Free - "Fodder Program"
New Players will be able to create a new account and and play for free for a period of 12 months. The new account will have limitations on the BattleRank (+ or - BR8) and the CommandRank (+ or - CR2). Essentially, new players will be able to have access to any part of the game but they will be limited on the diversity of their arsenal. Time Frame – We are shooting for February 14th for Launch.

Anyone got any comments on planetside? never played it before, but this might be worth a pop.

i had a limited amount of time on planet side and my pc couldnt handle it.

From what i have heard there is quite low server populations as with many other mmo's. It was good, but i dont think it would of held my interest for long. Though i might give this a try with my new PC to see how its looks with good graphics!

Actually, that's a judgement call and I don't think the RPG forum was the right place. Just because the overwhelming majority of MMO's are RPG's doesn't mean that just because an FPS is developed that's also an MMO should go there.

But meh, who cares indeed.

Would be nice if other declining MMOs made more generous offers similar to this. Instead of trying to grab the money as fast as possible, wait until the player is addicted to the game before charging them!

Do these "free" accounts require a valid credit card which is set to auto renew at the end of the 12 months? If so I can see quite a few players forgetting to cancel their subscription and not able to do anything about it when they get charged.

Yes, if it's free and you have extra time, you lose nothing...except perhaps your faith in MMO all together, but since it's not really an MMO, you'll live again.

While you're at it, grab a two week trial of EVE and i'll get you started online

Planetside is repetative tosh imo, and yes, I tried it for a few months off and on.

Played Planetside for a while with Barrysquad until we all migrated to WoW. Was great fun but only really when you had a good group of people to work with. Playing on your own or with randoms wasn't half as fun as getting a Galaxy full of your mates and hotdropping from it onto the top of an enemy base, or getting a column of tanks invading, or getting a swarm of aircraft to annihilate the enemy

It's not got the best graphics because it's an MMOFPS and has to handle lots of people fighting in one place as oppossed to the limited numbers of Counterstrike etc.

a) He was spamming his own site.
b) for the nth time.

2. His spam was some sort of crap planetarion spinoff.

MMO stands for masivley multiplayer online.
Perhaps the "roleplaying" forum is incorrectly titled, but in essence, all the "roleplaying" games, are MMO's too, including Planetside.

I could point out that SWG, WOW, EVE etc all include guns, rockets, tanks etc etc. Its not all about wands and pointy hats. Or are you suggesting that swg wow and eve should all be moved to the fps section?

SWG/wow/etc. should be in an MMO forum, not an RPG forum.
Even if they are described as MMORPGs very few people roleplay, instead they are just MMOs.

Probably only around 5% of the playerbases attempt to "roleplay" their characters, its some sort of druidic elitism from the dice throwers who moved to the online arena/computer games in general.
95% of EVE online players are not roleplaying as a spaceship captain/pilot/whatever, they are just playing the game within its context.

Kill the RPG title at the end and just make it an MMO forum, and there will be no bitching from me.
That said, hardly anyone reads them outside of the daoc forums, so yeah I think it should be here rather than in some arcane forum that someone might look at sometime next week.

I found planetside great fun when I started playing (that was almost 3 years ago now). Get's a bit repetitive after a while, but any game does. I'd probably rate it as one of my favourite games of the past though, mowing people down in a hover tank during a sand storm is hard to beat . No idea how it plays now though.

Btw, Planetside is a FPS (which refers to gameplay, not content; you play in the first person and shoot using your own co-ordiantion). It doesn't belong in the MMORPG forum.

Eve's really rather good - seems to have a lot of depth: that was what I think was the main problem with Planetside. It was really great fun to run around and blast people with friends for a couple of hours, but I found I couldn't bring myself to play it often enough to warrant the monthly fee.

I played it when it came out for 2 months, then took a break, and came back 5 months later.

Some of my best memories of online gaming come from that game. I remember being in charge of 3 squads of my outfit, the Vanu Soverigny (30 people), and we took on the might of the New Conglomerate at Cyssor, holding the island in the middle for a staggering hour and a half before our forces from the other continents could link up and take the NC from behind.

Not quite had the same feeling as when you jump out of galaxy, and you're not quite sure whats gonna be at your feet when it's over.

And Gekul, Planetside is a MMOFPS

If I didn't live on a rock, I'd go grab the discs from my parrents house and give it a whirl.
All former subsribers got a free activiation in the email too, I think.

People's opinions about PS are extremely polarized. Love it or hate it. No gray areas..

I personally loved it - and if Barrys Squad was still around, I'd still play PS.
