PK Mentality - Thoughts/Suggestions

This isn't a whine about getting PK'd, i know the server is open PvP, i realise by creating a character that's what i should expect, but I didn't realise the PK'ing would be quite so frequent and in most cases totally un-sporting and pathetic.

I have a level 10 pure Mending/Paci specced healer, which i created to support the relatively small guild I'm in from Prydwen. It's now got to the point where every single time i log in I'm dead within 1-2 minutes, i can't even run to a stable merchant so i can group up with guildies without being taken out. Atleast 50% of the time it's to the hands of a high purp who gets no exp, no RP and a tiny amount of cash for killing me, so the only possible reason they could have for doing it is just 'because they can'. Griefing in other words.

On one occasion i was rezzing a friend who had been PK'd by a purp chanter near a bind stone, when another guy ran upto the BS and chain cast PBAOE taking out around 10 players including me. He was high 20's we were all just over 10. He got nothing for it!

On another occasion i had sat down to re-log because of a Gfx bug when someone started nuking me (again a purp cos i died in 2 nukes).

I now realise why so many players dropped off from the US PvP servers and they are now the least populated of all. The majority of players don't want a FPS style version of DAOC where u can't walk 3 steps without being attacked, they just want a more open version of the game, without the Realm constraints of the standard server.

I think Mythic have got the dynamic of the PvP server totally wrong, the PvP is way to open, and unfortunately this allows those lamers who don't have any integrity or respect for a 'fair fight' to just grief play and gank people.

I would love to see a server which allows all the Realms to mix and group/guild, but only permits PvP within the frontier or Battlegrounds. That way we could have the mixed Realm groups we all crave, but the PvP would be more controlled and the lamers wouldn't be able to gank lowbies. Allow players to exp inter-realm but fight as a guild out in the frontier, that's what people really want. Not getting ganked by purp Chanters at bindstones, it just aint fun!

What do you guys think?

Well i pretty much assume that the pvp server concept will be reviewed by mythic as soon as the shrouded isles release stuff, and follow-up work has been completed... and they changed back to day-to-day business, it's not economic to keep servers which are frequented poorly, so either figures need to improve or servers will be removed.

Give it some time and mythic will actually change the settings to something more appropriate. the current deathmatch setting is not that rewarding for anyone on a longtime scale... there are several good proposals of players, how playability could be increased... and the server could be made much more fun etc.

Just needs some time. As usual.

I think the PvP settings are spot on. reminds me of the good ole uo days :D I have got seriously pissed off when repeatedly killed, but could the standard servers create such emotion? Getting revenge is even better.
You can't play this server as you do on a standard one. Never take the roads, avoid populated areas like prydwen keep as much as possible, go there to see healer and sell etc. Keep visits to a short amount of time. Just simple rules like this will cut your deaths dramatically.
Most pking seems to happen around the lvl 10 mark, which seems to me to be people from standard servers who will never take their char above lvl 12+ they just run around killing others their lvl. Once you get to 15+ it isnt too bad (at the moment.)
Also another rule to follow is attack all casters on sight, esp chanters, even if they con grey. Too many times have I run past them letting them live to be mezzed and nuked. Now they all die :flame:

A final thought, its amazing having running battles in familar places, through the cotswolds and from the battlements of prydwen keep. Adds a lot more to the experience.

As a whole the PvP server has no problems, there can't be any. Except the obvious game bugs and so forth that are same to every server. The main thing on the PvP server is the people, so bad people = bad server. Simple.

Not sure how it reminds you... UO was designed from "the bottom up" for PvP, DAOC is not. UO had the right balance between allowing PKing, and giving some protection to players (e.g. the guard & murderer systems) - DAOC has no built in balances, which is why it is now failing on the US servers, and why people will eventually not bother with it here. Unless of course mythic work it out for themselves and make the necessary changes. Sad really, because DAOC could really be an excellent pvp game.

Just make faction with guards whenever you kill someone.

If the person you kill is friendly or neutral with guards you faction decreases.
If he is aggro to them, your faction increases.

Let the faction level show when targetting a player.

Its a bit harsh, but will control the pk'ing

Perhaps divide guards by area so you can be aggro to the salisbury plain guards but friendly to the camelot guards.

Edit:
That being said, I have done level 10-15 by 80% PK gained xp so im no saint myself :)

I ment that the only true protection UO had was cities, which red had blue characters to shop for them anyway. Whenever you left town some low lvl would always start hacking at you and flag grey. Dungeons ment certain death from PK and blue healer squads. Also it was easy to make throwaway chars. A popular one being make a tamer, tame 5+ timber wolves and set them loose on people. It was also possible to set the wolves on young players and release them for fun :p UO was the land of mofos.
All this was pretrammel, it was very different in those days.
