Doubt anyone is actually afraid of some of these, and that they've just been made up by adding the latin (or whatever) to phobia.

Some are plausible like Agoraphobia, and Arachibutyrophobia (Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth), whereas some like the fear of long words are obviously made up :D.

Why??? I've seen people doing stranger things...
The deal with phobia's is that there's no logic behind it, so it's completely plausible to be afraid of strange stuff...
I have no doubt that there are people afraid of long words. It's in a way just as logical as being afraid of heights when you're standing on a glass panel of 40 cm's thick on 100 meters up in the air. the builders most certainly have calculated it thru thoroughly...

Highly wrong :x. Its all about the psychological state of peoples minds that make them afraid of things.

For example people are afraid of heights because they (may) be afraid of the building collapsing underneath their feet, thus propelling themselves into an inevitable doom quickly to the ground 200m below.

no, ingafgrinn is right.
some fears can be absolutely irrational - for example, i know someone that is terrified of buttons. it makes no sense at all to them and they cant understand why they are afraid of buttons, but they have a panic attack if they have to hold one, and become incredibly anxious if they can see them.

Yup, it´s a similar thing to anankasms. People are doing/fearing things that aren´t rational or even remotely real threats. There are people out there who´re afraid to step on the second step of a stair, or people who´re always eating the same food despite the fact that they don´t even like it. Other people can´t just read a book, they always have to read a sentence, then read it again backwards. It´s impossible to explain via rational thoughts.
Scary thing, this human mind, innit? :)
