ok seriously now, Big G is asking opinions, not trying to attack you Wazzer. I feel your post is somewhat overly negative in tone for your response and not particularly constructive, though you do get your opinion across, yes.

like I said in my earlier post, I am personally inclined to allow older work from a participant's catalogue for reasons stated in my other post.

*I* want something that allows *everyone* to compete, I would like to see the possibility of a camera-phone snap by someone on their way to work possibly winning. I base my thoughts on the fact that while studying photography some of the best work I ever saw was stuff that flouted the rules we were being taught to uphold with regard to the technical aspect of the work, but blew everything away content-wise. That said, a technically good picture with awesome content would always best a technically bad pic with content as awesome as the other imo.

Imo we have to perhaps better define what we want with the competition. Do you want the best possible quality of picture from a technical point of view, or do you want content to be leading?

I think for the sake of a peaceful life and not to upset the kids, maybe best to knock the idea on the head.

When I say good standard, I don't mean technically. If I did then I wouldn't allow my own entries. :)

By all means phone pics, provided you can actually see the content and it's not just guff.

And yes, it was negative in tone, but not angry, abusing or insulting in anyway. I think Big G's just a big fat comfort eater. (See, that's rude. :D)

Important Edit: That comment was made before I read Big G's post in the diet thread.

It's only a bit of fun, calm down. Personally I'd give more weight to someone who has entered an image that they've actually gone out and shot for the competition, but others may feel differently.

Unless you look at exif data, its pretty much impossible to enforce (barring obvious winter/summer differences).

Maybe the solution is to tweak the rules so that while each person is allowed to enter 3 photos, maybe two can be from a back catalogue ... and a third must be a new picture.

That way everyone can join in and it also encourages people to go out an take new pictures?

ah but I'll agree with Wazz on getting people to agree to actually go out and snap a new image for a specific contest before the deadline passes may be a deathblow.

point being the balance of deadline versus people competing versus new content.

Aye if you had to submit a new image I simply wouldn't compete. Probably wouldn't even vote either.

It's fine in principle, and would work on photography forums, but not here as we only have about two or three 'active' photographers.

Bit late to be adding to the conversation I know but I didn't see this thread here, have only been following the picture competitions.

Personally, I followed the first few and only entered in one because it is very much a case of who has been on more holidays so I've pretty much stopped at this point in time. Don't get me wrong, some of these photos are absolutely outstanding and it does generally capture who has taken the better photos in their lifetime but when as an example (don't mean to pick on anyone) when a subject of water comes up and you have an aerial picture of venezuela, other pictures from all around the world, you simply can't compete by going outside and taking pictures specific to the topic. Okay okay so that's an arguable point but if it was just as easy to compete by doing that, you wouldn't have the majority of pictures being from holidays ;)

Maybe that's the problem; the topics are so so vast that when 'water' is said, people instantly go to holiday snapshots thinking sod this, I've already done much better then I could by going outside and upload them. I love to see these pictures I really do but it does make me wonder if I'd rather just see them uploaded as part of a large FH photo album all at once as the vast majority are so good, it isn't much of a competition coming pre-prepared.

I guess if this was a majority viewpoint someone would have already sparked up and said 'lighters' or 'must have a can in the picture' or anything to make sure they're done specifically for the topic but it's a minority opinion.

Thanks for organising these by the way TDc, I do love to see the pics :) I can't think of a solution to make everyone happy unless it's done as 2 competitions rolled into one but I'd hazard a guess people don't particularly want to overcomplicate something which already works. 'If it aint broke, dont try and fix' it to coin a phrase...

1. Didn't we already cover this new/old thing?
2. There's no way of being able to enforce this rule anyway.

Enforcing it is easy... I don't know many people on the forum who would cheat, simple as that. You shouldn't have to enforce it; despite what people would say, this isn't a forum full of epeens, it's a fun competition and trust should be the enforcer if it ever came to fruition.

Your views indicate that you're impressed by holiday snaps. That's fine, everyone has their preference, but when I look at the submitted photographs I'm not looking at that - I'm looking at the image, what it says to me, how well the photographer has captured that image with the equipment he/she has. I'd happily vote for a picture taken on a mobile phone if it was right - for instance, if the subject was 'family' and someone had a great pic of their kid being spun around on the beach, but it was at 640x480 on some old phone camera, it wouldn't stop me voting for it.

I think people are intelligent enough to place their own handicap system on the photographs, and I don't think it's so predictable that the best photographer will 'win' each time.

Anyway, it's just a bit of fun and if you have a picture you like you shouldn't not submit it if you feel it isn't 'good enough'. Different things appeal to different people.

Yeah, if so why haven't I won yet?! :D

Just enter. There's been all sorts of variety in this water one. I don't vote for technical competence, I vote for content.

My first thought is no.

I really don't want to think about the slightest chance of getting into Nikon / Canon / Pentax fanboyism, that belongs firmly in the console forums ;).

I love Canon's, they are far superior 'n shit yo!

But yeah, what G said. I'd say it's just down to preference etc, but it's the same with consoles and look at that monstrosity of a thread we had going.

One thing worse than console nerds are camera nerds.

Agreed. Endless discussions of technical details is the dullest thing on Earth.

What matters are the images you make, not whether your bit of £3k kit is better than a £2.8k bit of kit.

I sort of agree, but like for G's photo above, it's interesting to know what kit was used for a particular shot. I wouldn't mind seeing a quick list of specs and settings under the photos posted in the comp threads. It wouldn't be any more intrusive than a lot of the sigs people use. Purely voluntarily of course.

I don't see why we can't include this information. I'd be interested to see it. Just so long as people don't discuss the equipment used I'm happy.

I can enforce no discussion, but I'd prefer we just agree that the kits themselves are not up for discussion. I'm all for people disclosing their stuff though, as both new fellows and peers can learn from each other.

I'm cool with that.

Teeds, can you move some of these posts to the "rules discussion" thread? This thread is a bit fragmented and such. I'm just fussy and picky really :(.
