as I've lost a phone, I can either go back to my old 6120C, or I can keep that as a reserve, and get a new one.

so far about 9785696598690 people have advised me to get an iPhone, and while technically it's everything I want, it's joining the iPhone crowd that kindof puts me off (no offence guys) plus the amount of joshing my mates will give me after my years of telling everyone that everything apple is poo.

what I've seen for myself is that I really like the Nokia N97, but I really need to know if it's fast enough. me being me, if I press something on the phone there must be no lag. especially when sending a text or choosing a contact et al. so no lag, pausing or other crap.

helpor me!

oh yeh, I use phones for calling people and sending texts. sometimes for helping my lappy get on the interwebs. I don't use it for listening to music or browsing, unless it's google maps or something. so it must have a gps.

nah, my provider's arsy about them, and I find them too wide. That's one of the reasons I like the sliders.

Would sir consider something in an HTC? I've got a couple of them and they're OK - great for business stuff, a bit annoying for phone type stuff but the newer ones may have sorted that out.

A touch pro2 would be awesome, however I've watched Yoni struggle with her Diamond -freezing and the like. Don't know if it still does though.

Does your provider offer any of the new nokia models yet? Might be worth waiting a few months for the autumn/winter quarter phones to come out.

Out of all the phones i have had this year the HTC Diamond 2 is my favorite with the UI its hard to notice its WinMo for 95% of your day to day tasks. I have not noticed it being slow at all but like the N 97 it does suffer from a few early firmware niggles. Text Message Bug (not present on my phone) and the contact bug (easy to fix in the end) being the big two. Also has the advatage of HTC offering a 6.5 update later in the year.

Bear in mind it is a huge phone though, wider than blackberrys -my mate has one and I would not say it is the basic text / call phone you are looking for at all.

Do you mean the Touch Diamond 2 is huge? It's 107.85 X 53.1 X 13.7 mm and the bold is 114 X 66 X 15mm if so you might have meant the Touch HD which is the same spec as the Diamond 2 but a bigger screen.

that sounds like me when i wanted to move on from my trusty x51v pda. i hate many things apple have done. but at that time iphone seemed the best replacement so i got it with a hard case that didnt have an iphone shape. best device ive got in a while. G1/G2 are good alternatives

iPhone is such a let-down when you compare it to many other smartphones on the market. They're only just trumpeting about cut and paste now being available on the latest software version... umm, I had that on my phone more than 8 years ago. :)
iPhone screen rez is 320x480. Many HTC phones these days have 480x800.
There are a number of turn-based offline satnav apps for WinMo (TomTom, iGo, CoPilot etc). Apple won't allow satnav programs on the iPhone, but there's talk of Apple buying into TomTom so watch this space.
Finally there's the whole fanboi mentality of many iPhone owners. I can't ever see myself subscribing to it because it's anathema to me.

Ones to consider IMO...

HTC Diamond 2 (Topaz) - uses HTC's TouchFlo3D as the GUI layer.

HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium)- uses HTC's TouchFlo3D as the GUI layer.
Think of the Diamond 2 with a slide-out keyboard and conference speakers.
This is the one I'll be getting as soon as I get rid of my SE Xpreria X1.

HTC Magic - HTC's second Android phone

HTC Hero - HTC's first attempt to combine the TouchFlo3D principles with Android (HTC Sense).

If you're interested in HTC phones, then bookmark http://forums.xda-developers.com because some seriously talented programmers are producing custom ROMs for most HTC models that are faster, smoother and with more features.
For example, the stock ROM that comes with my X1 is slow, sluggish and doesn't feel "finished", while the Touch-IT 10.3 ROM is fast, responsive and brings HTC's TouchFlo3D to my phone. :)

Check out some youtube vids of the Diamond 2. It looks swish in the shots but when you see it moving you see it has the same problem all my other HTC's have had - massive loading times on everything. That's the sort of thing that gets so very very annoying when you use it regularly.

I really like the look of the n97 it looks awesome for the net BUT you can't beat the iphone for it's browser and applications the price tag however is ridiculous and the monthly plans are TERRIBLE your looking at £50 a month or something just for a rubbish mins/texting plan.

thanks for your replies guys, that's really awesome :)

there's a HTC hero demo online here: YouTube - HTC Hero preview video which looked pretty promising imo

I can get one as per the 10th, and it's quite a bit cheaper than the pro2

Nokia E75 here: YouTube - Nokia E75 Review I like it a lot. To me it's much more a "phone" than a smartdevice even though it isn't.

zomg zomg! so I went to my provider's shoppy thing more or less to get an E75, getting there about 5 mins before closing time -always a bad thing usually- and talked to the man about the Nokia. He was enthusiastic, and showed me the phone, while én passent chatting about other phones and I casually mentioned I liked the HTC pro2 and he lit up like a 1000W bulb. Then he started off on how he liked that HTC too, and that all the usual HTC niggles were fixed in it, etc etc.

then he went off on a tangent -all this while setting up the E75 nokia mind- , regarding that it was a shame that the pro2 was so expensive, and I'd have to pay at least 259 euros for it and how much that sucked.

then he bipped and bobbed with a colleague for a bit.....and gave me the pro2 for FREE! holy jeepers am I a happy bunny :D:D:D

Nice one its a great phone and im more than happy with its little brother. As mentioned get over to XDA Developers to fine any software you might need. Also a great place to look if you find any niggles.

You've got more jam than Hartley's, you jammy git! :)
I'm truly envious.

Mind if I ask the details of your contract? Mins/txt/data allowances, monthly rate etc. You also said €, are you in Ireland or mainland Europe?

heh though ofc my provider messed up and I can't call or text for "administrative reasons" :/

sure you can ask. I live in Holland atm. I pay 32.50 euros for 240 minutes -or- texts (meaning a minute/text costs 13 e.cents. outside the bundle this is 30 e.cents) and unlimited "free" "slow" internet. the internets cost me 2.50e a month, and is perfect for email/lappy online in the train/msn/google maps/et al but is only free within NL, meaning as soon as I roam I pay through the nose for the megabytes.

according to xe.com 32.50e == 27.84 gbp

Ouch you get robbed over there teedles.

For example, I get 1000 minutes AND 1000 texts free, free internet (wap/3g/ hspda) for £20 a month. Now that is with a loyalty discount for staying with the provider when my contract ran out - but it would normally be £35 without the discount.
