Thats assuming they can afford to have all their stationary, systems and signage changed to reflect the new amounts.

When they set the price of a TV (for example) they don't sell them for £851.06+VAT=£999.99 They sell it at £999.99, the vat is calculated backwards. They aren't going to start selling them at £978.42 are they? Or 99p pens for 97p etc etc. Maybe in Tescos but I can't see anyone else doing it.

Utter waste of time, just like every other scheme to come out of the labour government. Just like the last time they were in charge, they know they are going to lose so are trying to make the job as hard as possible for the next party (conservatives) when they take over.

Whenever I've billed VAT it's been added on afterwards - not calculated backwards. Would be a pain in the ass to do it that way...

Yeah but retail pricing is based on an attractive price point (e.g. £xx.99) so the VAT is calculated backwards because in the UK we always show the gross price (e.g. £9.99 would now become £9.77 if they just adjusted it). If it was the US it would be easy because prices are always shown pre-Sales tax.

All that said, for most shops it would be pretty easy to see if they'd not passed the VAT cut on to the customer and as has already been mentioned that'd be some awful PR.

Interesting thing for me is there's now a 7.5% tax difference between here (Ireland) and the UK (the Irish actually put their VAT up by .5% a month ago). Add in the weakening pound and I think I'm going to be going up to Northern Ireland a lot from now on.

Enjoy the prices whilst they last OPEC have all agreed to cut production again because prices are too low. They want prices up again and to create demand they simply cut supply.

It's price fixing on a grand scale. Yet unlike other cartels OPEC remains immune to the EU. Why don't EU investigate the manipulation by OPEC and fine them accordingly?? They've done with many other businesses over the years.

Ah yes, but that only worked when the world seemingly had unlimited money (infact it was all debt and borrowed) and unlimited growth. Those days are fucking long gone, so for OPEC to cut demand I could see it having a negative effect where people simply won't have the money to pay the higher prices like before.

I'd stake money that this will be the only time OPEC won't win.

And how is the EU supposed to fine another country? It cant even enforce sanctions against its own member states with any reliability. OPEC are a cartel, it's not illegal because they are not goverened by the same laws we are. We pay because we need the oil.

Further to this.

The BBC said:
Opec, which accounts for 40% of global oil production, cut output by 1.5 million barrels a day last month, but the move failed to stop prices from declining.

Lowest it's been since '05 I think I heard them saying on the radio.
