Brother reminded me of an idea I had a few years ago, and to be honest I'm amazed that the powers that be haven't already implemented it.

It's to do with the lazy fucks that sign onto the dole year in year out, with little or no intention of trying to find decent paid work.

The idea was that everybody that signs onto the dole should be made to do 40 hours community service a week for their dole. Sweeping streets, helping old ladies, cleaning graffiti off walls.

If they refuse to do the community service, they don't get their dole. This would make them realise that they HAVE to work, like it or not - and that no matter how much they moan about the minimum rate of pay, it's still better than working 40 hours a week for dole.

It would also mean the government makes extra savings by not having to pay people seperately to sweep streets, help old ladies, and clean up graffiti.

Hmm. I don't think they would do a very good job :/

Who cares - if they realise they HAVE to get up at 8am like the rest of the world and get into work, or have no money at all, it would force them into the stark reality that most of us live in - there's no such thing as a free lunch

Well bugger me, that actually sounds like quite a plan....

Indeed, but then we would still have to pay people to clean graffiti etc, because certain people specialise it, and I doubt that many of the people on the dole have the equipment experience.

But for the other things, like cleaning up the streets, we could get the bastards to do it, yeah :)

Yes, it is rather. I can't really elaborate on that, I just fully agree with you Perp... with that as well as the 3rd-child benefit idea you had a few days back. Do you study law?

I like that idea, though the bin men/cleaners might not like it.

Also I think 40hours would be too much to ask, and you would have the other parties whining saying you were using them as slave labour, 30-35 would be better

Personally I like 40 but in a political policy way 30-35 sounds better :)

Also it would piss of a lot of the voters who are dole users to vote the other way.

What about minimum wage? What about basic human rights? What about the 'legitimate' unemployed who are desperate to find work but don't have the time to look for it because they have to mow bloody grass verges for 40 hours a week?

On top of that these people need to be supervised by paid staff. If it did take off, what about the redundancies of employed people who are finding their jobs completed to an inferior standard by cheaper labour? Ironic when they have to sign on only to do the job they did before at a fraction of the salary.

yeah but most of them are too lazy to get off their arses and vote, I'm a full time worker and I can't be arsed to vote (didn't we have this arguement last year?)

Yes, there's a problem with job-seeking but there may be workarounds. Maybe it would only apply after 2 months ?

Hmm, I'm sure the Tories proposed this recently :)

Anyway. In principle it's fine. It's all in the details tho...

WHOA

PONCY little japanese cars?

are we talking hatchbacks here?

or hairdresser mobiles? (i.e. his MX5)

anyway point b)

i spent a year and a half unemployed, i was down the job centre 5 days a week, i travelled to swansea by bus to go to their job centre too, because llanelli's wasn't connected to theirs job wise...
i applied for thousands of jobs, i went on hundreds of interviews.

in that time i got offered precisely two jobs. one of which i would have been suicidal to accept - £50 a week traineeship where i'd have had to spend £15 a week travelling, and 2hrs on the bus each way every day... yeh RIGHT.

the other i DID accept.

not many people CHOOSE to be unemployed... it may sound incredibly stupid to some of you, but you can be OVER qualified too - and thus completely unemployable :/

For the last few days I've been doing aptitude tests and personality tests and having them matched against ideal careers, ones that would be suited to my personality, motivational imperatives and abilities.

One thing kept coming up time and again: Librarian.

That said I do love books....

Point 1) The list of community services I mentioned are by no means exhaustive - just a few off the top of my head. Even going round woodland areas nailing up bird boxes to trees is community service. Working at a local homeless shelter dishing out prepared hot meals is community service.

Point 2) The number of hours stated is by no means final. It was a mere suggestion, and if I recall correctly the original figure I proposed to my brother was 32 hours a week

Point 3) Granted, a lot of people on the dole don't want to be there, and would rather be working properly. I fully appreciate that. This would be aimed at the large numbers that use the dole to supplement their drug dealing income etc. Having said that, even people that want to be get a job but can't have to concede that in this day and age there is no such thing as a free lunch. The NHS is in tatters mainly because old people are living longer than ever before, and the money is simply running out (actually, it ran out years ago). Maybe a grace period of 2 or 3 months could be implemented as previously stated by Wij may be a fair concession.

Point 4) It could be argued that this reform would give doleys less time and chance to search for new jobs. Pish I say. When I want a job I search the internet or get a paper - what's stopping you doing that in your own time? The current situation as I understand it is the Job Centre only requires you to show evidence that you've been searching for a job once a fortnight? And what constitutes as 'evidence' is laughable too. Hardly a step in the wrong direction is this.

Point 5) Hmmm, I'm tired - I'll continue this in the morning :)

I don't entirely trust this whole vBB shambles, so I'm skeptical about even saying this:

[Apparently] Happy birthday Perple!

I've no doubt you're not even going to read this on the relevent day; its the thought that counts.

I'd go with that perp ;)

Sounds good idea tbh, I know people on dole who do fuck all, and they need to get out there and so something for their dole.

I mean this should of been about ages ago, working a bit of community service for dole = a job. Its like a guarunteed job that everyone has if they have problems or whatever, instead of a guarunteed income :)

Gah perp, your up late :/

Anyway happy bday etc. nice idea, now get it put into practice....

I think it's a very good idea, but there's no way you could make them work a full week, cause you need to time to visit job centres go to interviews and even get yourself looking tidy.

Having said that, getting them all working part time in the community would do no harm at all.

M

well yeah know about that idea, last time i looked it was worked out a bit better. If you dont do a good job you get the crappiest work there is, after that you loose money. Lets not forget they get money from the state so that means they should do some work for the state. Only problem is that you have people already doing that work, then again make them supervisors.

Just a couple of points, I do agree with Perp, on this one, get the lazy bastids working.

I think it should only be part time, say 25 hrs a week, otherwise you give them an excuse as to why they are not looking for new work. A grace period of a few months would also be a good idea.

I also understand that people who are trying really hard to look for a job, but are over qualified would have problems, I don’t know how you would sort that one, and maybe someone else can come up with some solutions for that :)

afaik, most of the government bodies covering community services are under staffed (I could be wrong). So this type of thing shouldn't put anyone out of a job, simply make the existing staff more capable of dealing with the workload that they have

I vote for Perplex. (Btw Happy birfday mate)

Hang on. They're not going to work for the council ?!?

Most councils are run by crackpot glory-hunters and Trotskies who are obsessed with their own pet projects. They'll have them working on the Moa Tse Tung memorial bike-lane replacing all the A roads :eek6:
