I should very much hope that it's not a HDD flaw, as I just purchased the one I'm using, less than 2 weeks ago.

Just coming to think of it, U haven't said a word about how long have u had these symptoms? Only the last 2 weeks u've had the new HDD? If so, it'd sound more than accurate to point it in there...

And you'll get yourself a new one if it's broken... Yeah, I know, the trouble of reinstalling it all sucks...

Hope everything gets solved out.

Perhaps a bit late and totally uselesee but

I have a RadeonX700SE in a newer pc. I have had nothing but LD problems after 3hrs, after 25 mins, after 10 mins continuous periods of LD with varying times in between. I pulled my hair out then, after that all gone pulled someone elses hair out.

For your information my solution was to roll back the ATI catalyst to version 5.2 and drop the colour to 16 bit instead of 32 bit. Game runs happily in 1280 x 1024. I played for two nights now about 9 hours of play and no LD.

Bliss.

THe problem is I dont like ATI so am going to change card and go back to Nvidia, which I have never had any kind of problem with.

Hope this helps.

If too late. Am soz but only just solved my problem.

I havent heard of non-radeon people having the problem so maybe yeah. I was waiting to see if rightnow had a solution. I'd be gutted to shell out on a new card & have the same problem.

I used to use a 9000 and had this exact problem, the card would simply give-up in rvr.

For some reason i bought another radeon 9800 pro2 when i upgraded and its a decent card, but in rvr it freezes.

Now then, i upgraded my RAM recently to 2 gig paired/cooled from 1 gig/budget and have not had a crash since...i think daoc is a very RAM hungry game.

Just a thought.

Ok just a little update with a check list of what I've tried so far:

  1. Taking out the soundcard to see if that was conflicting anything - Failed
  2. Installing a new soundcard to see if that would help - Failed
  3. Switching around ram blocks (2x 512mb Kingston, I can't remember full specs, but could be PC133 - it's something not that old for sure) - Failed
  4. Checking cables and cooling in the interior of the cabinet, harddrives, gfx, cpu cooling etc - Failed
  5. Fresh DAoC install - Failed
  6. Full file scan before login screen - Failed
  7. Running virus program and spyware detecting programs - Failed
Next steps will be:
  1. To do the memtest thing - taking a while because after I finally found some floppy discs, I discovered that my floppy drive was broken, so I need to find a version that will allow it to be burned to a CD-rom instead.
  2. Next time I get my pay check, I might buy a new graphics card, probably some newer Gforce model to see if that will do anything.

Conclusion: I'm clueless, I don't know why it's happening, and it makes no sense. I've talked with people who have less memory than me, who run it with no problems, I've talked with people who have the same gfx brand as me, who run it with no problems, I've talked with people who have same mboard and pcu as me, and run it with no problems.

If the last 2 steps don't help, I don't know what will help anymore, as nobody seems to be able to put a name on what's causing all the problems I'm having.

EDIT: Hadn't noticed the new replies - My HDD is about 2-3 weeks old, but the problem goes further back than that.. actually one of the reasons for buying the new HDD was to try and fix the problem (that and to get more space).
I'll try to drop down to the version you mentioned above and change settings a bit - wish me luck :)

:< quite spooky how similar you predicament is too mine, I've been in the state you describe for about 4 months and nothing seems to help as I said before I'm also looking into upgrading my graphics card, cant decide whether to go ati or nvida atm, I'd like too stick with ati but something in the back of my mind nags at me that the card may have similar issues.

And then ofc I get the feeling that upgrading too any card may not solve it, first time I've ever had a problem thats been so difficult to pinpoint and resolve, its pretty much a case of spending more and more money and hoping it works out :<

Another update:
Dropped to v5.2 catalyst and 16bit colours, and first test has passed. 1 hour and 45 minutes of RvR without a single crash. :)

I'll be testing it some more, but usually I would've crashed within 30minutes after logging on, so 1 hour and 45 minutes is a vast improvement. I could actually enjoy myself a little bit, since I didn't have to reboot over and over again :)

Thanks for all the great advice, let's hope this is the last chapter of this thread, and if any other people encounter the same problem, I hope they can come here for advice, information and help.

I get a bit more lag when meeting big groups in RvR than I used to, but I RvR'd for several hours last night without any crashes, relogged to PvE for ML's and back to RvR without a single problem.

I really hope that this will help for you as well - it's the worst computer game problem I've ever had, and everyone who has it deserves a good solution!

Glad to hear it worked ok for you.

On the graphics card, I am going to go back to my old Nvidia 6600GT, which IMHO is the best bang for buck model you can buy currently.

Good Luck

DAoC and radeons don't seem to mix atm. Had grief with my 9600, my 9800 and my x1600. In the end I just swapped to Nvidia but wasn't happy as I always prefered ATI.

One other thing you could do if the problem comes back is try another 3D game - see if anything crashes there. Or maybe 3DMark on high settings? At least if it failed there you'd know it was deffinitely gfx card related (tho it seems you've sorted it out now)

hey

Just read your post..
Exactly the same problem i've been having, except i can run in NF and OF for about 2-3hours before it does the same thing, no error message or anything just freezes then takes me back to windows screen. However.. if i restart my PC and give it 5 or 10 minutes i can get another 2-3hours+ out of it.. what did you do to solve the problem in the end?

Dropped to v5.2 catalyst and 16bit colours

This was my solution. I had a bad night the other day where I crashed upon log in on characters in NF, but since I switched settings, I have been running RvR and PvE normally with no crashes.

I'm still considering to replace my radeon with a gforce of some sort, if not only to fix crashes entirely, then atleast to have the game run more smoothly (since my current radeon is radeon 9000pro 128mb - not the best option for a graphically heavy online game imo)

I hope this helps for you as well, otherwise I made a checklist earlier in this thread, of things that could be worth checking out.
