Let's face it, sad as it is, many top players will fall if they think they can win a foul, now this may be because they are anticipating the contact, or simply that they are cheating *****. Either way, I do not think we will ever get rid of it. The only sad thing is that what was once a very European thing to do, now seems to be a trick used by many English footballers.

I'd rather see football with a few punches thrown every now and again than people diving. Bring back the 70's.

Arsenal have a few bad apples with Eboue being our worse. But the displays by Chel$ki players vs Liverpool as us were shocking any little touch and they flew to the floor.

I'm just glad that none of the United players dive

That best be sarcasm.

It's not.. After Mourinho, Rafa and Fergie made an agreement a few years ago, about telling their keyplayers to stop diving, United and especially Ronaldo has stopped in doing so

Yet Drogba and Gerrard is still tossing themselves about at any given chance.....

Some united players still dive on occassions. Give you one example from a recent game (think maybe vs Porto but cant remember). Gary Neville jumped over the challenge in the box, landed, then thought a second and went falling to the ground.

Ronaldo is a tough one, though sometimes it looks as he dives, the speed he runs at means slightest touches can send him flying. Something that hampers walcott and Lennon as well. Reason Ronaldo has a poor rep for diving is that he wants a freekick wether it a fair tackle or not, which sometimes is funny but at times he is hard done by.

I really don't get this "Gerrard diving" thing, yeah he dives and he is a hypocrit for doing it. But saying he dives as much as Drogba/Ronaldo is taking it a bit to far imho! His amount of diving is average imo!

Hehe, I'm actually a very fast football player! Not very good but fast, I really don't get this argument "so fast so slightest touch can make him fly!". It's BS and it's diving :)

I disagree with you, i played a high level of football before my injury and the faster the player the easy it is to knock them to the ground. It also depends on run style as well, if they are pretty flat footed but run fast then they harder to knock down as their weight is more balanced however if they run on the ball of their foot, or their weight balanced towards their toes then they are very easy to knock to the ground.

Ronaldo's speed and run style is what makes him fall at slight pushes, if you watch him at low speed then he very hard to knock to the ground but at high speed his balance can easily be disrupted.

Nah, it's just dives :) It's obvious when it's a scoring chance and he gets a tackle then he can just run on like nothing happened. But if he sees no scoring chance he will go down like a sack of potatoes.

And just to make sure I don't get all the manure fans on my back; I don't think it's just Ronaldo that does it! :p

Ronaldo just uses the greatest gain formula when he gets a knock. carry on if stay on feet = goal if not fall flat on arse.

Gerrard gets stick for diving because he always seems to do it in the box and hes not very good at it tehy all seem obvious. So maybe he just needs more practice to get better? Its not quantity its quality.

Ronaldo does fall over too easily sometimes -but when you get kicked as much as he does and have the ref ignore it, can you really be suprised?

I don't really have a problem with a player exagerrating to highlight a real foul, however I do have issue with feigning injury and falling when there is no contact what so ever.

I do. What's the point? Loads of times over the past few seasons i've seen penaltys not given for actual fouls because players make a meal of it and end up looking like they've dived.

There was a great example in the Stoke game at the weekend when Fuller should have had a penalty, but the twat jumped about 12 foot in the air and rolled around like he'd been shot so the ref just told him to get up.

Also, you can't blame the ref's in those situations, the players bring it on themselves and it's got to stop.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Aoami again. :(

I remember a discussion i had with Soze a while back, where he said a memorable quote (at least for me as a swede/hockey fan who doesn't share the same values as English people).

'"it's not a dive if it's contact"'

I don't know if it's just a cultural difference or if it's more that I'm originally a hockey fan (in hockey divers get both mocked and penalized). But that statement is laughable imho :p

The problem is that refs and linesman do not give legitimate fouls the majority of the time when players do not react, in that culture you cannot blame the players for exaggerating the foul to get what is fair. It may not be the perfect situation, but it is what we have, and do any of you really see it going away? With so much at stake, players will always find a way to break the rules.

If we are talking unsporting behaviour, then I have more issue with the grecko roman wrestling referred to as shirt pulling that defenders and attackers get away with these days than a little play acting.

Fuck that.

Football is a man's game, and the players need to take a leaf out of some of the Rugby players books. Part of being a man is not just being able to look after yourself, but being dignified and sporting as well.

Rugby also has video refs that sort out the issues though. Do you really want football to be so stop/start?

They don't use the video ref's (in union at least, don't really watch league) for much, other than to sort out debateable try decisions.

I think that in Rugby the ref's are better, not because they know the sport better, or are trained better, but because they don't feel as much pressure because they know the players are going to listen to them, accept their decision, accept that sometimes decisions are difficult ones, and not pile in screamed and shouting and swearing when they get a 50-50 wrong.

Long sentence :D

Not saying that this is the case with you, but if I had a £1 for everytime someone told me they used to/would have played a high level of sport, until they got a bad injury, I would be a rich man now.

I just dont understand why people cant be like me and just admit they arent good enough lol

In rugby league now, you can listen to the refs mic all game. Its quite interesting to hear what goes on. Here is an example, after the initial punch

I destroyed all my ligaments and tendons in the knee, as well as tendons in ankle which lead to me giving up football. Understand what you saying and I would never have made it to professional level, but still played at a high level before my injury. High enough to be able to develop a very good understanding of the game especially in regards to attackers, afteral due to being mainly a defender i had to understand them :D
