Peak oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Peak oil is the point in time when the maximum rate of global petroleum production is reached, after which the rate of production enters its terminal decline. If global consumption is not mitigated before the peak, an energy crisis may develop because the availability of conventional oil will drop and prices will rise, perhaps dramatically."

Many believe that it has began already and the global food crisis is directly related to it. Critics say it'll take 10 or 20 years to happen and other sources of energy will be ready by then. But its going to happen sooner or later.

What do you think is going to happen? Will the world economy fall to pieces or is there nothing to worry about?

Personally i believe that the rich will keep on living as we always have but the effects will be disasterous in poor countries because it has a direct impact on food prices.

Yes, its happening atm, the reason why oil production is going up and the price is going up, is simply because of the exponential demand from india/china in the next 20 years.

Gonna be a fun century to be alive.

The other fun part is the food situation - our farmers can make more money growing crops for fuels/random crops paid for by the european CAP, and we just buy food from poor countries, works great.

oh one problem, the people in those countries cant afford their own food anymore.

oops!

People need food to live, and to produce food we need oil. No one is saying that this will wipe out the human race, but it will cause massive problems.

im pretty sure theyve developed hydrogen fuel now for vehicles.
but ofc we cant have that because it means people could do things for free, and that aint what the govt wants.

I would hope so. But even if so, replacing a sufficient amount of cars, airplanes, ships, tractors etc with a hydrogen version is gonna cost a shitload of money --> recession atleast.

Also... thats a pretty big if ;O

how do you mean?

Well, just logical that oil is there naturally, then it should be there. So if we take a part of the planet away, planet will probably come up with a new thing to replace the loss or produce more. Somehow. But oil is part of nature and as such, it needs it for something.

People need food to live, and to produce food we need oil. No one is saying that this will wipe out the human race, but it will cause massive problems.

I don't know about massive, slightly problematic maybe, but we've got time to come up with stuff. Anyway there's more then likely something in the US army warehouses for the loss of oil too. Heck, they had DVD players back in the 90s.

I dont think you fully apreacite how fragile the economy actually is. Something like this is definately going to be massive. And if this truly is happening now (which as far as i know, is not known unless you're in good relations with saudi royals.) then we dont have time "to come up with stuff".

To add a little conspiracy element to the conversation: It does make you wonder why isnt this a bigger topic? I mean i dont think i've ever heard anyone even mention this on TV.

No we don't. You do know there was life before the combustion engine and there will certainly be life after it too.

Biofuels arent viable though, there is no way anyone can grow enough to run every vehicle on. the only way forward is the hydrogen fuel cell for vehicles, charged using nuclear power.

Its not as if everything will be replaced over night, fuel cell cars are already available, give it 20 years and they will be the norm.

Though its not just petrol that comes from oils, its plastics and chemicals too but again there are alternatives.

If you look at the average life of a car it's probably about 10 years..

That means they replace them all once every 10 years anyway. If we are going to run out of cars then starting to bring in hybrids etc now and simply phasing out petrol cars will work just fine. In fact the best way to do that is to put the price of petrol up so owning a petrol car is no longer econimically sound and the hybrid looks attractive to people.
The more people make the switch the longer the remaining fuel lasts for as well, so it's not as disasterous as perhaps it looks at first glance.

You can't both complain that we might run out of petrol and also complain about the price of it. In order to get away from using petrol they need to make it too expensive for people to buy, otherwise why stop using it?

Ofcourse i don't appreciate it 'cause i doubt the effect will be as massive as you think.

You're talking like the world stops turning with no oil, while we were quite happy before.

I know that, however producing the amount of food that the current world population needs does require oil.

Again, no one is saying that human race is going to be wiped out. But there will be big problems.

It normally takes a "big problem" before people actually do anything about it tho.

Once the big problem has occured then it tends to get fixed fairly quickly since it actually matters to people then, and the reasons for not doing it tend to evaporate into thin air.

There's other ways of doing all this stuff but at the moment it's more expensive. When it becomes less expensive (after your big problem) then we'll switch to it.
Money doesn't vanish, and while there's a limited amount, all that happens is that it gets passed about in a slightly different order. Food will become more valuable so more people will make food since it's worthwhile. Food will then drop in price because there's more of it, a new balance will be formed.

But you do understand that sustaining our current lifestyle will be impossible without oil/its replacement. So yes im sure we would be perfectly happy if we lived like we did 200 years ago but the transition is not going to be painless.

And im not saying anything like this will happen. Thats what im trying to find out.

Who said that urrent lifestyle should be sustained?

And didn't say we should live like 200 years ago, said we could easily live without oil.

There is actually loads of Oil in saudi and so on, the people that own it are holding it back to artifically increase the price in oil by only realising small amounts at a time.

Whether we want to sustain our current lifestyle is questionable. But we will want to sustain our economy.

But isn't a changing economy what got us our current economy?

Might be that in a 100 years people say "thank god we ran out of oil".

a crude awakening - the oil crash

Used to be available to watch on google video afaik but seems to have been taken down now. Shouldn't be too hard to find a torrent though.

Should answer all your questions on the issue.

It's not really a case of it being "possible" its more a case of it being true, if you look at the amount of oil that is pumped out in the places there and then look at what is sold / export there is a good indication of a cache of oil somewhere waiting to be sold when the world needs it most.

Well again, you could be right but its hard to say either way when theres no evidence.
