Got an old computer standing with a crappy pci card in it, but want to use the computer sometimes. Do anyone have any suggestions to what better pci cards are avaible? Have a GeForce4 MX 420 atm in it.

The card you have is probably one of the best PCI available cards m8. tbh for any games from that computer's golden age MX420 is more than enough, for any newer games that computer as a whole is totally unusable... What is it? Pentium MMX?
As for older games, you could hardly find better piece of hardware.

Tis a P4, discovered too late that it had pci slot instead of agp. :(

M8, are you sure with you having P4 without AGP? My old 300MHz Celeron had AGP already... this sounds strange... could you download CPU-Z and submit html report from it here as attachment?

Try to find PCI->AGP convertor or if you have PCI-E(PCI Express) slot then buy GF4 6600GT/6800ultra/7800ultra,some versions support PCI-E slots.

Graphic Interface AGP
AGP Status enabled, rev. 2.0
AGP Data Transfer Rate 4x
AGP Max Rate 4x
AGP Side Band Addressing supported, not enabled
AGP Aperture Size 128 MBytes

this is what it say's about the gfx in the report..
Feels stupid now that's it an agp.. So tried my asus 6600 extreme, but would not work in the computer..

What more confuses me is the "agp" contacts the mmx 420 card got contacts like this
http://213.238.202.163/boxshot.php?id=29428&typ=large

and the new card this contact

http://213.238.202.163/boxshot.php?id=39716&typ=large

Both of those cards are as you say AGP. Here's a close up from ASUS's webby of the N6600/TD which it seems to be:
408_l.jpg

You can see from that piccy that the pin structure is identical to the ATI one, with the exception of the additional cut out section in the ATI.

PCI-e (PCI express) is the latest bus technology - don't confuse this with PCI they are different and not compatible. The PCI-e version of of ASUS's 6600 is:
424_l.jpg

See that the row of contact pins is much longer in this case (its 16x PCI-e, PCI-e slots can actually be different lengths depending on how much "x" it is).

Also note that there are quite a few Pentium 4 systems out there without an attachable AGP slot, despite having an AGP on-board graphics chip. Don't assume you have an available AGP slot just because the software says the box has one - it might be hardwired to the on board graphics chip.

Aye it looks like the top one, when i tried it on the older comp it just let out a shreak as i turned on the power, so turned it off, tried it on the new comp no problem. So guess my old comp needs a lower type card.

What power supply do you use? You need atleast ATX 350W for 6600 series afaik.

I have a 250W mini psu in my Cube case and run a 6600GT with no problems.

Did you attach a cable to the card? Remember seeing a 4 pin contact on the card..

I just suggested it could be the problem since p4 requires much more power then AMD also,so p4 processor + 6600 videocard + some other devices and the limit could be overtaken.

Will return to the store and have a chat with them... But after reading up on the power bit it seems to be a problem..

I'm so happy now... Just installed the card and its working. I went to the store told them my problem they asked me what comp. i had. And they said at once it was the power. So they gave me a new power supply for the computer for free... So saved 400 SEK :)

The difference is a mini psu from a cube case is undoubtably of high quality with very little variance on the voltage rails.

If you have a cheaper PSU (common in ready built PC's) you should have at LEAST a 350W PSU for a modern graphics unit. The default PSU from the period when he bought his PC was probably only around 200w anyway and undoubtable of low quality.

Good to hear it fixed your problems, PSU's are so often to blame for unstable crashing systems.
