It really passes me off when they say we have learned a lesson here.

ffs you have had eons of experience with [insert current debacle]. You just ignored everything, did it your own way and fucked it up.... as usual.

Apparently more people voted in the Xfactor final.

'Your forefathers fought for the right for democracy, now vote'

Yeah, they did, but they didn't fight for layers of un-necessary layers of bureaucracy so those at the top can avoid the blame ;)

got no vote here in london. sounds like a waste of money to me and unnecessary politicisation of the police system.

Its basically designed so that MPs have a fall guy they can blame issues of policing on.

My area...

Voting Summary Details Number
Seats 1
Total votes 77753
Electorate 524252
Number of ballot papers rejected at the 1st count 2150
Number of ballot papers rejected at the 2nd count 3984
Number of postal votes sent 80005
Number of postal votes returned 36535

Rejected ballot papers Description 1st Count 2nd Count
Unmarked or void for uncertainty 1210 3972
Voting for more candidates than the voter was entitled to 906 12
Want of official mark 22 12
Writing or mark by which voter could be identified 12 12
Total rejected 2150 4008

I calculate that as...
77753 / 524252 = 14.8%
(77753+4008) / 524252 = 15.6%

The figure being reported is 15.6%, but when you take away the spoilt papers it's 14.8%.
4008 spoiled ballots out of 81761 for the WHOLE of North Wales. Compare that with the 2010 General Election where there were 67 spoilt ballots out of 38111 in this *constituency*.

I also notice that big media isn't reporting the number of spoiled ballots as a function of total ballots cast.

They spent £100,000,000 on it. That money could have been put to such better uses. This country's skint. What we really need is another level of pointless red tape . We got enough of it in the NHS. More fucking middle managers than doctors. More offices than beds.

+1

I'm going to take a dump in the voting booth and write a big "X" on it with the pencil.
"You might as well put Mr Poopy in charge. He's cheap, and he'll certainly do a better job than any of that lot."

The first I knew about any elections taking place was when Russell said her school was closed for the day as it was a polling station for the day, I asked what were people voting for, she said 'something about the police?'

That was the first and last thing I heard about it until today when all the reports of the bigwigs moaning about the turnout

I'd love to know where this money promoting it went, cos I didn't know anything about it

Some travel agencies are going to do very well in the next couple of weeks...

You got more chance of getting transparency investigating Roman Abramovitch.

I've never written to a MP before, is it true they have to reply to you?

Yes, but unless its going to garner votes or positive PR you'll just get a standard hand-job from one of the office monkeys

In a time when the country is supposed to be saving and making cuts due to the massive debts, the government decides to create a new position for retired politicians in each county, country wide for £100k a year.

We survived this long without one, why do we need one now?

Except it doesn't really save much money if any at all, does it?

Exactly - as explained in the comments on Toms article.

No but it does at least allow the general public to make accountable the people now in charge of setting police budgets and other important functions, whereas before these elections, such people were completely unaccountable and largely unknown.
