Current system:

k think that's all you need to know xD

Proposed upgrade (all prices exclude VAT):
512MB of RAM - 45.99
HDD - 180GB 7200RPM 8GB cache etc - 97.68
Creative labs 3d blaster 5 Fx5200 Ultra Agp 8x nvidia in - 92.50
MSI KT4VL (MS-6712-020), Socket A for AMD Athlon XP, KT400 Chipset, 266/200MHz FSB, 0/3GB DDR SDRAM, DDR400 (PC3200) Compatible, 1xAGP Pro (8X/4X), 6x32 PCI, Integrated AC97 Audio, On-board LAN, ATX Retail Box - 46.15

From ebuyer shipping is 3.99.
So the subtotal is 286.39
VAT is 50.12
and the total is 336.43

Right, the only problem is, can I do this cheaper? All prices are quoted from Ebuyer.com. I may also think about buying a new processor with it, if it is compatable with the RAM and mobo, all suggestions will be helpful :D

Thanks :x

Depends on a lot of things.

The only motherboard make I really trust is Asus at the moment - having built many machines out of them, they're fast and solid. You will probably want to get better DDR RAM if you're upgrading your motherboard.

That's probably about the best prices you're going to get, although you might want to splash out on a slightly better board - for instance an NForce2 chipset - or get one without quite so much onboard, but these days that's difficult.

Graphics card I can't really fault - good for price etc.

Hard drive you can probably knock about £20 off.

Have a look at www.scan.co.uk - I always get my bits from there. Fast, reliable service.

I already cross-checked the prices with scan as I used to use them, but I find them expensive now. The RAM was on today-only pricing etc, and it was still cheaper from ebuyer. I already have PC2100 512MB, the ram I'm adding to it will make it 1024mb, or is it really worth getting faster RAM, will it make that much difference? I know about the mobo, I have an Asus one at the moment, but I don't really think that a different make is going to make that much difference.

Like Venom said, Asus are a solid brand to get. That mobo you qouted seems awfully cheap btw. Instead of looking purely at cheap mobo's, try checking out reviews and stuff. Trust me on this one, don't go buying any old mobo cus it willl give u hell later on when new hardware/software comes out.

BTW, if u get faster RAM and keep the old stuff, it will be limited to 2100 by the slower RAM.

If you REALLY want to save moneh, then try overlclocking your current spec, ie RAM timings and your graphics card. My comp is overlclocked to buggery atm and runs like a beast atm. But remember not to over do it!

Ebuyer is a solid site to get decent parts from=)
