Gents,

I'm looking at a PC upgrade very soon, i'm running out of hard disk space at a fast rate so would like to get a decent sized SATA-2 disk. However my mobo only supports SATA-1 (Abit AN7, Athlon 3200+) so I thought "fuck it, lets just upgrade mem/mobo/cpu now at the same time".

I'm going to jump on the Intel bandwagon since they are way ahead of AMD at the mo.

However, my GFX card is AGP and I really don't want to change that just now to PCIe.

Question is, is there an Intel board that will let me upgrade that has dual PCIe and AGP to get me by in the short term?

Sata is backwards compatible. A sata2 drive works fine on a sata board, just some of the fancy stuff you'll probably not need won't work.

My advice is to just do the drive, and save up for a full system upgrade (inc graphics).

Seconded. Theres only really one AGP AND PCIE board and it's a crock of shit - jack of all trades, etc. Even then, I cant remember if its an AMD or Intel one either :/

SATA is certainly not a worry -theres no discernable difference between "2" (no such thing, really) or 1 - all the drives you buy are pretty much the same and work one either. The only difference for the end user is the name really.

I'd say you're best off saving up for a couple of months first and getting a PCIE graphics card too. If it helps, they're cheaper than their AGP counterparts.

And heres some of still stuck on a trusty AN7 and 3200 ;)

As you can see from my other thread G, I too am looking to upgrade. I was looking a couple of months ago for the exact same thing you want. I wanted to upgrade to the latest boards and processors, while still utilising the graphics card I'd only bought at the begining of the year for £120.

In the end it seemed that to find a new board with AGP and PCI-E is like trying to find water on the moon. It may be out there, but in the end, noone can be bothered searching.

Thanks guys, i'll go for the hard drive in the immediate term and then look at mobo/cpu/mem/gfx down the line.

Been a shitter of a year moving into my own place, it's amazing how much money gets sucked up by "shit for the house". :(

Big G - I'm in exactly the same boat - moved into our own place last Saturday and christ, all the odds and sods as you say. Moved in with my brother in a private rented house - thankfully he's fronting the rent for us (generous sod he is) for a couple of months till we're sorted.

After buying a months shopping, cusions for the sofa, new tv aerial, various kitchen items and tea/coffee/sugar jars - etc etc - bloody hell it all adds up :(
