Can anyone tell me what temp my pc should run at, its currently at about 60 degrees, is this good or bad. Both my case fans packed up so i got 2 new ones, but the old ones were wired into the loom of the power supply, where as the new one have got the little female 3 pin socket, which is fine, but i only have 1 power outlet of that type on the motherboard

Is there an adapter that i can plug in the motherboard that will give me 2 outlets off of one socket

Hope that makes sense????

There are power adapters that convert one of those three pin jobbies in to a molex adapter (molex being the chunky things coming from the PSU that go in to the HDD's/DVD Drives). 60 does seem a bit hot - how's your cable management? Is it a mess or have you got stuff out of the way as much as you can?

That's the fan adapter, can't seem to find it elsewhere and that one is out of stock, but it proves it exists :)

yes that looks like the kiddie i need to sort it out, as for cable management, its all pretty good, i even have the side of the case off, to the point that its been off so long that i dont know where i put it??? (your gonna tell me now that it would run cooler with the side on aren't you???)

Running temps should be about* low 50's (50°c - 55°c) idle, high 50's low 60's (55°c - 62°c) under load.

Try replacing thermal paste with fresh stuff. Cleaning the fan and fins on the heat sink to. These should bring temps down a little. But being honest at this time of year 60°c for that CPU is nothing to worry about.

Also the XP 3000+ will cease to function at 170°c ;)*

*again very rough, nothing is set in stone. It realy depends on your CPU its self.

Useless info... to do ° open notepad, press and hold alt. type 248 then release alt. copy and paste into document :) (yes i googled it :p)

Cheers Bob, maybe not so bad after all then. just about to shut down and blow everything out with the hoover, its a bit dusty to say the least

only changed the CPU fan about 6 months ago cos that started getting tempremental as to when it decided it was gonna spin, but i will try anything that you think might help. would like to do a rebuild, but dont have the time/money at the moment

Ah well, onwards and upwards, back to boobs and bums ;)

Ahh thought it was an intel. Also, as far as I'm aware, having the case side off isn't always the best for temperature - particularly when you get your fans sorted. You want a constant throughput of air in a single direction usually, having the side off can mess up the airflow*.

*May be total bollocks but I think it's accurate.

If it's the older Athlon XP(ie Barton) then I think thats the normal temp, mine was running at 65" during full load in the summer with the standard fan. If it's the new one it sounds abit high, but then again im comparing to my current XP3200+ which runs at 25" idle Oo

This is correct.

You should get the best cooling when the case is on. They are designed to work with the side on. If they needed more air holes to cool properly it would be perfectly possible to add them.

You also have to remember that with a computer you have 1 or 2 components that generate all the heat. The case may feel slightly warm (a few degrees above room temperature) but that won't stop any of the components working. Whats important is to keep the CPU etc cooled and the best way to do that is forcing as much air over the heat sink as possible.

Mobile Aircon unit is your friend - I hated using my PC in the summer because it kicks out so much heat so I bought an Air Con unit to cool us both - terrible for the environment but works for me :p
