PC hardware woes (lights on, no dice)

Right, my last bits for my new PC arrived today, and like an eager puppy, I started building.

Got all the bits and bobs in, turned it on, see lights coming on, fans spinning and dead. Nothing except LED's on mobo that are always on.

My

mobo is abit fatality AN8 SLI socket 939
cpu is AMD athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
PSU is tagan tg530-u22

I get a POST code LED on the mobo, and the number is 87.
From the manual, it says NET PC: Build SYSID Structure

It could also be 8.7, which is from the power on sequence, which translates to "check CPU voltage", but I can't touch the CPU unless I can get to the BIOS.

Might as well be speaking swahili.
I've done the usual debugging:
Unplugged everything, plugged it back in.
Unplugged everything except motherboard, get lights, fans on mobo (not CPU fan) and then it dies, and I'm suck with the post LED "87".

Nothing I do gets me past this 87 error, and I'm stumped. I've tried googling it, but I just get a list of POST codes.

Atm, I'm trying to just get a response that isn't 87, but I'm strugling.

Anyone got any ideas, or words of wisdom?

urmmm...shorts with the case...thats a popular suggestion.

Did you connect the case lights/HD light/power cables correctly - if you didntt you can get some of the symptoms you describe (these connections are easy to foul up, espcially if youve got poor eyesight).

Finally, remove everything from the mobo except the graphics card and psu (even remove the RAM, might even be an idea to remove it from the case - rest it on the antistatic packaging it came in) - does the screen light up. Rebuild the system piece by piece, starting with ram, then HDs, pci cards etc until you duplicate the fault. I know you said you tried this, but if the mobo, no ram but WITH minotor, gfx and psu gives no banana - well the problem is with one of these three components.

And you recon its the psu...so you should try a different psu or measure the voltage with a voltmeter.....I think you already have the most likely answer.

Ok, I got past that stage. I had a 4 pin power connecter that wasn't "clicking" in, so CPU wasn't getting power.

Next item of woe - GFX output. I can't seem to get a signal to my monitor.

I had it working once, but got a "unable to load operating system" error. So I turned it off, made sure HD cables were properly in, and that my WD drive had the correct jumper.

Boot it up, and not a thing on the screen. Syas no signal, then it goes to sleep.

It's a BFG GeForce7900 GTX

It's got dual monitor output - does it matter which one I use? The output on the card isn't VGA, so I have adaptors I stick on, and then plug the monitor into that - can I only have 1 one of these plugged in? I plugged in both so I wouldn't loose it, but I seem to recall it not working when I plugged both in.
The manual for the GFX card is pretty poor.

Atm, I'm just tired of it all. 4 hours spent so far - I do this all the time at work, it's a case plugging everything in correctly. But I always get bloody problems when it's my personal machine.

It does matter which one you plug in, should be able to read port1 or port2 or something on the back, put it in port1 :p

Youre doing it right, use that adapter on your monitor cable and plug it in. You only need to use the 1 port.

Dumb question, plugged a power cable to the 3d card internally? I assume that it has a power connector on it.

I was going to say check the 4 pin connector for your first prob, I get that prob all the time ;)

Yeah, PCIe power cable is in, fan on GFX card is spinning.
Have to work until 5 sadly, so no updates until then.

Hoping it works, I'm supposedly playing in a 40 man World of Warcraft raid tonight :)

something is deffo buggered

I've unplugged everything except the mobo power, and POST is displaying 9.0

Sadly, my speaker on my case is knackered, so I can't say anything about audio feedback.

With RAM and GFX in, I still get no gfx feedback, when I should at the very least be getting some form visual from my mobo.

So, something is fucked. And im going away for 5 days, so a good old fashioned swearing session is in order. And I'll test the mobo using a PCI card I'll borrow of someone.

You dont need the ram in....might as well try without, nowt to lose.
