i am thinking of building a pc so other members of the family could use, what would be the best way to block accses to bad/naff sites and make it safe for a child to use?

some firewalls do filtering by url, and keep logs on what urls have been accessed.

also, and perhaps most important. the family doesn't get admin rights and do not know what the administrator password is.

Use specific filtering services. Software based ones are probably the safest bet.

is a good list, none of them are that expensive.
I'm suprised noone has offered a decent proxy service, but i can't find an independant content filterer online, it's a shame.

This might be a bit trite but sticking the pc in the main living room is a cracking way of stopping people visiting naff sites ;)

I'd ensure the computer is somewhere you can keep an eye on it if you've got kiddies using it.

Let the kids see the horrible truth. The earlier you let them experience it the sooner they'll learn.
