wasn't it something like "press F8" to bring up the boot menu?

Do you need to enable booting from the CD Drive?

In the BIOS look around the first couple of options : there should be an option such as "Boot Sequence" or "Boot first device/Boot second device etc" - set the cd/dvdrom as first boot drive and if such an option exists, select "Enable booting from other devices"

Sounds like youve a Dell windows recovery CD (or similar) in a non-Dell machine.

Various vendor-supplied recovery CDs pull all sorts of lame stunts, like checking files exist on hidden harddisk partitions for example, to make sure its actually being used on the machine it was supplied with.

Grab a 'real' Windows CD and use that.

Took it down to my computer shop (not pc world heh) and he said that my harddrive had somehow corrupted itself during the reboot process he said its a rare thing but sometimes it happens.

He didn't use the reboot CD he reformatted the HDD from scratch and reinstalled windows via that windows CD your on about.
