Pay as you go motoring tax - petition the PM

I've no idea if this has been posted before so please delete Mr Mods if it has been, I did do a quick search but didn't see anything obvious

If you drive a car, please read -

Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2. Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay As You Go' road tax.

The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 667,000 people had signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the goverment to at least take any notice.

Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition.

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.

If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. Sign up if you value your freedom and democratic rights -

Signed this months ago. Its rather telling that the government get hysterical about Jade Goody and a few tens of thousands of complaints, and yet ignore hundreds of thousands of signatures on a petition (and millions of people marching against a war).

What's bothering me is all the people who seem to think that if this did come in they'd get cheaper petrol, less car tax etc. Fact is the government won't lower it by much and overall you'll have yet another tax to levy against us and make it even more unclear where all your hard earned cash vanished to.

I don't really mind the ability to track except that it could potentially be used to prove speeding offenses (in theory anyway). My car isn't exactly new and even though I am a bit of a granny driver (had a very bad accident when I was a teenager) I can't drive looking at the speedo all the time.

There's apparently 2 million cars on the road that aren't taxed, that's 2 million x road tax and any taxes they'd get off insurance/MOT (since no tax usually means neither of those..) If they actually found the plebs that weren't paying we'd not need any additional taxes for a while.

Finally got my confirmation email to my hotmail account, two days after I signed the petition. Number 10 is probably still using windows 2k or something. I don't normally bother with signing petitions, but I just can't express how stupid I think this idea is. The only thing it will achieve is to make motoring even cheaper for those who don't bother to have licences/tax/insurance. It sure as hell won't be money from their taxes used to foot the £20'000'000'000 or so it would probably cost to implement the scheme either. If they really wanted to cut down on congestion, a good start would be to encourage businesses to make their office hours more flexible. Is it really necessary to have the vast majority of workers start and finish at roughly the same time every working day? The same could go for schools. They could also not do stupid things like giving Manchester a super-casino whilst at the same time telling Manchester it needs to do something about its' congestion and over-crowded public transport. (Unless the plan all along was to give the casino to an underdog, and then slowly fold under legal pressure from the Blackpool and the Millenium Dome and allow more super-casinos than they originally promised. But that's a rant for another time...)
