Paul Potts audition!

Hi

I don't get sentimental very often but this guy's singing for Britain's Got Talent - Paul Potts - sure got a lump in my throat. This is just wonderful:

Just joking btw, I saw the original showing of the audition and it left me with goosebumps. It is a great song to begin with and he did a very good job with it considering he has had no classic training at all. Glad he won. I do think he murdered 'Con te partirò' in the semi though, he did't seem to have the range for that song.

Potts is said to have first sung Opera in 1999 in a karaoke competition, dressed as Pavarotti, although he had said during the show that his voice had always been a source of solace in the past when bullied, so he would have sung from a younger age.[6] That same year he appeared in the Michael Barrymore talent show My Kind of Music. Although he did not win the competition, he won £8,000, which helped to pay for singing lessons in Italy. During his singing course he was selected as one of the best students, to sing in front of Luciano Pavarotti and Katia Ricciarelli, who were apparently impressed with his singing.

For the Bath, Somerset, based amateur company 'Bath Opera', he has performed on four occasions in the roles of Don Basilio (Marriage of Figaro), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), the title role in Verdi's Don Carlos, and as the Prince of Persia and also the Herald in Turandot.[5][7][6] He also sang for the Royal Philharmonic in front of an audience of 15,000 and toured Northern Italy as a soloist.[5]

No indeed, I decided to look up some information about him on Wikipedia some time ago and came across it. It's a shame really, makes his performance less outstanding for me.

The clip reminded me of the film Shine. The 'Shine' was based on a true story about a child prodigy David Helfgott (got the DVD case here and reading this!). Anyways the part I love to watch - and I must have watched it at least 30x! - is where he enters a cafe to play the piano. David Helfgott suffered a severe mental breakdown in college and had been in a mental institution for years. He had been released but was still very strange. Who wouldn't be after having electric shock treatment and drug therapy for years? Getting back to the subject matter. He enters the cafe and as you would expect everyone looks at him and laughs or makes stupid comments. He then sits at the piano and some guy cracks a comment or 2 - 'come on Liberace' - or something similar. The cafe owner goes up to David to stop him from playing but just as she starts to speak he starts to play - and boy could he play! The whole place just shuts down and they are all totally gob-smacked. After it, and just like the Paul Potts clip, they go crazy for him. If you haven't seen Shine then you are missing a tremendous film. And as I mentioned it is based on a true story.

That is also marvelous. Guys sang his socks off. He should be called Paul Well Hung. Not sure why he should be called that but still you all seem to have a thing about his name .

Listen to the original sang by Andrea Bocelli and tell me he did it justice, the tempo was off for nearly half the song and he sang two sections slightly out of key. He did a very solid job on 'Nessun Dorma', I must admit I was more impressed before I found out he had classical training though.

...singers should f*ck off to those...singy typey songcontests and leave others to actually have a shot at winning these kinda things.

Sure, you got a guy who can fart out rainbows and world peace, but alas out comes a 6 year old or a fat stay-at-home mom who belches out a couple of notes, throw in some sobby story on how his/her grandfather died in world war 2 and this is not about money, but it's the memory why they sing and voilá! We have a winner.

And I would recommend downloading - I mean buying - the movie Shine. The bit in the cafe when he trots off Rachmaninoff's Flight of the Bumblebee is worth getting the movie alone. Oh - and the bit when he's playing the Rach 3 in concert is awesome.

You're very welcome. I've been playing the piano for coming up to 27 years now, and I'm playing the Rach 3 myself at the mo. Its extremely difficult - hardly surprising that most concert pianists consider it to be the most technically and physically difficult and challenging piece on the circuit.

I've given lots of concerts, but nothing approaching the Rach 3 ! I've got a few recordings on camcorder but got no idea on how to stick it on u-tube. Must be tens of MB in size.

So they are on your computer in probably avi format? You can join Stage6 and upload avi files and they will convert them to divx on the fly. This is a slow process but heck they host the file for you on very fast servers. Visit their website here: Stage6 · Upload Video Clips. Share, Watch, Download Videos. Believe it or not but you can actually stick a sever on your own computer and peeps such as myself can download off you. How technically minded are you though?
