Patching, how is it possible?

Localisation testing

With all the news and stuff about the new patch, I'm certainly not the one to say i don't want it as quick as possible. But face it ... once this patch is on, we'll want the next one ... and the next one, ..........

Even if the translation is done as quickly as you guyz say, it is also the testing that takes up a lot of time...and I mean A LOT of time.
From any of my experiences in QA , I can say that localisation (especially into German) can be a complete and utter hell for every developer and if it is not done properly and the patch is released before fully tested, all the German and French people will start moaning to CSupport and flooding the UK servers ;)

So we can all go back to moaning and grumbling and being displeased without it helping cuz it wont speed up things for sure or we can sit back and hope for the best. It will arrive ... one day :)

I think GOA should sign Yomar up straight away and stop this language larking about ;)

The only thing detrimental to the translations is the exact phrasing of quest prompts, the rest will be the same .bin files. c'mon GOA work with Mythic on this one, i'm sure with a little teamwork the translation process can be speeded up no end.

And yes I do believe the "Turn Zombie Upside Down" does actually come from Legend of Mir (From one of the numerous mir refugees that DAOC has captured).

I add my vote to that. It would mean there was at least one person at GOA who knows what they are doing...

There isn't just the patch server problems. Your client can be patched forward, but not backwards. If say, a french man decided to try out 1.48 in english for a bit, he'd have to stay in english untill the french version was at 1.48.

IMO GOA made a bad choice of having the same client for 3 different languages, that's from a brit's point of view. However for them, there is less money involved, for a variety of resouces (servers, human resources etc.)

Enjoy what you can, while you can. Then when it gets boring look around the corner.

Having travelled extensively throuhout Europe and the States, and experienced gaming on servers both sides of the pond my opinion is that American servers put their customers first, whereas their European counterparts couldn't give a toss.

I played a space sim called Jumpgate from beta in US and EU (callsign Shaeffer for those with long memories who played it) and the customer support our side was hopeless (MightyGames in Germany). Possibly this was down to being underresourced but then if it is down to GOA rather than Mythic to do the translation for DaoC, I can only assume GOA are trying to do the translating on a shoe-string budget to keep their profits up rather than employing more (or better) translators.

What I do find mind-numbing is the typical European short-termism. To survive in online gaming companies have to be switched on to stay ahead of the opposition. There are a lot of new games due out to attract the disenfranchised. Keep your customers happy and you keep them loyal. Users are a fickle bunch - piss them off and they piss off to another game. Peeps look at being 3 months behind the Stateside servers and feel like second class citizens. I've seen this situation develop elsewhere and the end result has always been mass migration.

To re-inforce my opinion that "their European counterparts couldnt give a toss" I refer you all to where we are all currently debating: Barrysworld. The plug was pulled on the original forums at a moments notice without giving a lot of peeps the opportunity to arrange migration (half the peeps I chat to in-game are still unaware that this forum exists). Was that the attitude of a "caring and considerate" host company?

PS Yomar gets my vote. And maybe if GOA had a translator working with the devs on the original patches this problem wouldnt arrise.

Haha - you flatter me guys!

Problem is I don't speak a word of German or French - I only translate to Dutch. I do have a good network of translators though and I know how to streamline the proces...

But if GOA can pay me? I'm not sure :p

benefits

Thst's the most important word for GOA, there isn't any other explanation. They are thinking only in improving its benefits at any cost. That's the way the big companys grow and fall, cos now (people all over europe that play in english server, including those that don't use english as a mother languaje, but don't speak french neither german) al of us are thinking in doing the same, migrate to US servers. But anyway, it's a GOA's translation problem, cos if you visit ITALIAN VERSION OF DAOC you'll see that they are upgraded to 1.48 since the first days of may, so when we could use 1.48, they have been playing it since two months ago. They have to translate it too, the same packet than Mythic have sent to GOA, and just for a server, that the most of time is used for up to 1000 players !!!!. So if a relatively small company, can do it, for a small community of players, and be profitable, that must show us that GOA is stealing us. Some more details: Italian version, doesn't makes you buy the game, the physical package I mean, They let your account free for 15 days (30 for those that played beta) and then if you like service you can pay online. If this is an online game, it's not hard to think that people can download it, isn't it? So GOA was always thinking in get all the money they can, selling the game (which for spanish people like me has been some extra euros) and then what do you have? a bad costumer service, the official forums down, and a slow upgrade policy. So I'm thinking about going even italian or US servers, witch a lot of english players did when release was delayed. Be sure of this, the next upgrade of GOA servers, I supose 1.50 will be here for christmas.
Anyway, I have payed for 6 months, so I'll use my money and I'll be playing until October
if (GOA_policy=improved)
continue_playing=1;
else
if (italian_continue_well=1)
buy_online_registration=1;
else
buy_US_game=1; //US version is has been always well
Don't dude it, translation is been done be 2 secretaries in berlin and paris, that have no idea of what the game is about.
My vote for any real tranlator that could be hired by GOA.

It is our right to complain!

It is our right to complain! Especialy when they have set a date and the server still havent been upgraded! We should stand on our rights and not bend over and just accept the fact that they havent done their job. This doesnt just go for bad patching but alot else in life. If u just say okey all the time u will get USED and IGNORED! This is about standing up for urself and say: I dont take these lies! I WANT THE TRUTH! so keep on whiiniin or it will NEVER be done. And they will do exactly the same with the coming patches.

But hell I like the game... :)

Americans dont care about Europe or the rest of the world, this reflects in their politics (some of em cant even point out england on a worldmap!) :m00: :m00: :m00: :m00:

Remember the french can't type english so they got programming-languages'n'compilers in french. Thing that takes time might be that they got to translate the entire code, not only the text
