Paste removing

Dont know if there is, but I need to remove a heatsink later on, if there's paste actually on the cpu, can I remove it with nail [olish remover, or do I leave it, or what ?

I just used a cloth (non-static one), and it seemed to do the job okay.

Isopropyl alcohol or meths usually works a treat for me.

Acetone(nail polish remover) or xylene are both fine. You shouldn't use meths cos its very gritty

Isopropyl alcohol is what you should use. Though I just use a cloth myself.

Akasa make some very nice thermal goo remover which is based on citrus oil, and damn good it works too.

That said, anything from nail varnish remover to mountain bike chain degreaser will take even the nastiest pink thermal goop off..

just make sure it doesn't leave any residue, and if cleaning your processor too that you don't end up liquifying electrically conductive thermal pastes such as arctic silver and get it anywhere else... *bang*

i got a "jar" of that Akasa TIMclean gear Xavier is referring about, it really is the "mutts nutts" for when your cleaning up the old heatsinks, cost me around £5 and lasts for ages.

the smell reminds me of crushed oranges and lemons mixed together tho

i used medical spirit, it just evaporates away leaving no residue


its prolly the colouring or the bolocks* they put in meths that makes it gritty

*poison in alchhol = no tax = cheep = good for burning

Meths will make you go blind.

But I too have the akasa TiM-Clean.

Comes in an attractive bottle. Smells like lemonade.

Also removes artic silver 2 from cpu dies :-/
