It's just batter, the same stuff you use to make yorkshire pudding and batter for fish. The later you can add a bit of beer to for extra yum.

In Sweden every thursday is pancake day served together with pea soup

We also have the oven pancakes, but not on thursdays!

This is the Finnish thing too. Thursday is peasoup + pancake, in finland it's usually done in the oven (square cut to squares). The military thing comes from this being mostly served in the military as it's cheap and effective sustenance.

We don't make -pan- cakes per say, the pan style are more like crêpes around here.

indeed. in the NL, the pancakes in the restaurants are quite thick, whereas what everyone makes at home is more a crepe style. mmmm I think I shall make pancakes soon
