I can't get over how pretty it is! I know I'm lightyears behind everyone else, but I just played and completed Portal 2 SP yesterday.

My workstation is such that I can play with every eyeball swaffling video enhancement on max, but besides that, ye gods how pretty is this game, and how much attention to detail they took? Holy crap dudes!

I'm going out on a limb maybe, with certain other games not yet played, but I can tell you in complete sincerity that this game has the most awesome textures, lighting and world effects that I have seen in a very long time.

fanboi gush over!

The fuck? Source engine is woefully far behind current tech. They've done well with what the engine is capable of, but it's hardly anything groundbreaking. Even Mass Effect 2 with it's low quality consolified textures looks far better than Portal 2.

Remember when Half Life 2 came out and the visuals trounced everything? I miss that Valve.

well, perhaps it's them taking the tech as far as it will go. on my screen it looks *amazing* with max AA and AF. the only thing that displeases me is the cracks in the glass. they look fugly, but other than that...awesome.

I agree with your point though, because I do belive that the last time I was this amazed it was HL2, with the HDR and other effects. I like the clear visuals mind, I feel that games like LFD and LFD2 get away with murder by diluting the visuals with film grain effect.

A lot of it is the subject matter. It's quite easy to make that clean laboratory environment look nice. Kinda like how racing games are a lot easier to make photorealistic than any other genre, simply because there is a lot less to do.

I think this point is highlighted when you compare the new-Aperture chambers to the old-Aperture area. I think all of old-Aperture looked pretty average or maybe below average (not to mention dull as fuck gameplay wise, but that's another discussion).

I should mention that I'm a little bitter because I was duped by the hype and ended up not having much fun with the game at all :p

Thought Portal 2 was awesomely pretty. And that's because it's not trying to be uber realistic.

If you want graphics to be uber realistic and look like the real world why not try this handy tip: Go outside and use your eyes :)

That's a knobbish argument. :)

"not trying to be uber realistic" or "the cranky old Source engine can't do uber realistic"?

There's nothing wrong with striving for more and more realism in games engines.

There is.

The only reason realism should be a goal is if there's a gameplay-driven reason for it. For the vast majority of games this isn't the case. Concentrating on graphics first and gameplay second has been the blight of the industry since the 80's.

Edit: Oooh. Topical B3ta!

I also thought the more open areas with the plants and things looked nice. I think my fave bit is running through the maintenance corridors with the crazy light swinging overhead casting shadows from the room building arms on everything, there's so much attention to detail. also, fwiw I absolutely enjoyed the idea of old Aperture, and the slow transition through them and in to the current day, and I was actually quite stumped on some of them. Much more so than the modern lab levels, I must say. The immensity of Cave's works, and the ideas of putting all aside in the name of science came across well to me.

Fancy doing the Co-Op sometime Teedles?

sure bud, remember school starts in a month and I'm gone again, so make the most of your teedle moment :D
