WikiPedia is outstandingly useful and for a lot of things has a huge depth of information. The recent Tsunami has a gigantic encyclopedia article with references to all sorts from within.
Try searching for the place that you live though, even the smallest village. I tried mine (Great Shelford) and there was even a small artical about the place! It's really quite impressive (although you sometimes wonder who has contributed such content).

erm, no, that would be here. I remember Douglas Adams talking about this website a few years before he died (on the Big Breakfast, or summat).
