Ouija Boards

Heh... I remember a friend of mine telling me that they had tried to summon the spirit/ghost/whatever of some crazy mass murderer type at a party.

Everyone seemed to have a good laugh about it.

Then their dog went all crazy.

I am superstitious by the way.;)

I was bought one as a present by my aunt some years ago.

I shoved it, unopened, in the cupboard under the stairs, and there it sat for ages, until I finally decided to throw it out.

They scare me to death, as no-one really knows how the human mind works well enough to explain why such strange things happen when these things are used.

ex-girlfriend tried to get me to do it, we where alone and it was like 2am.. as much as i'd say "yea yea yea i'll do it!" - when it comes to crunch time, i really wouldn't want to mess with something i don't know about.. i'd be too scared of some weird shit happening :/

Did one on halloween with friends. Had a good time, much drinking and laughter. I think they're a good tool for social gatherings but it's just a game like any other. Have no feelings one way or the other about them tbh :(

Interesting, that's where my University is now.

I believe it's all bollocks btw. (Harry hill - The power, of suggestion).

If these things are so 'real' why isnt there any proper scientific research into it?

Surely something like this would prove the existence of spirits and other bollocks, so why is there nothing proved about them?

Because they are just rubbish.

Nobody can prove it yes.

However, nobody can disprove it either.

I don't believe in ghosts and don't believe ouija boards can do anything.

Would probably try it but I'd be smirking all the way through it knowing that's it's only the subconscious(sic?) that moves the glass so I'd be thinking all sorts of weird shit to spook people.

When you purposely think something its a concious thought so good luck Jonaldo. :p

Seeing as you've just insulted everyone and dismissed the entire thread, perhaps now you'd like to give some evidence?

Or perhaps this is actually your proffesional opinion and you're a Dr of Psychology? No?

I've heard some scary & wierd stories from friends about these things over the years. I've never actually tried one but if I got the opportunity I would definitely give it a go. I'm very curious when it comes to things like this. (raising the dead etc.)

I did one..

Nothing really did go on, we were all drunk, and expecting things to happen, so if a door opened, we would all shit ourselves..

End of the day, i think we were scared, because we were expecting some crazy things to go on, and so soon as a slight thing went on, the brain jumped to a supernatural conclusion..

Since alot of adrenaline is pumping, we expect to see crazy things..

Just my bullshit on the whole thing anyway..

I would rather stay in a house that was build on top of a ancient pagan burial ground and do a ouija board..

Wow. Grown up reply there. I'm not getting into a flame war here but was there really any point in your first post?

Trouble is, it's easy to say "it's a load of old bollocks" - and people often say that when they don't actually understand what it is they are confronted with, or are so closed-minded that they refuse to accept that there may be something out that that is beyond their "normal" abilities to perceive.

I don't know about the supernatural or anything, and the glass we used wasn't "floating" over the board (as is commonly reported) but it definately was in contact with something, the movements of the glass were extremely forceful - whether it was our collective subconscious or whatever the resulting "conversation" with the board scared the living shit out of us ALL.

There have been studies done into "collective subconscious suggestion" (which is the broad category this sort of thing falls uder), and they make for interesting reading.

Not to flame anyone, and I respect all peoples religious and spiritual beliefs and whatnot but... it IS a load of bollocks.

If anyone can ever prove to me that there was some invisible spirit moving the pointer around to spell words then I'll believe it. Till then I don't have to disprove anything.

It's not about ghosts or whatever. People are just saying that it's freaky stuff when they've seen it working.

I agree with MrB's post. It could well be all in the mind but then we don't fully understand our own minds yet so who's to say how it happens?

Thats kind of like saying that Jupiter is made out of raspberry ripple ice cream on the inside. Prove me wrong.

I've never tried it, but I'd be sceptical of the results being anything but movements of the glass or pointer caused by subliminal suggestion (if thats the correct term here). I'd be much more impressed if the glass moved by itself. It sounds like one of those victorian parlour tricks, like ectoplasm, or table levitation. Also, I bet nobody would be quite so freaked out if they performed this experiment on a bright sunny day in a graveyard. Saying that, has anybody tried it in a graveyard at dusk/night? Woah.

The one that really freaks me out, although I'm sure there is a rational explanation, is where you get 8 friends to try and lift you conventionally (and failing), then they put their hands on your head, and miraculously, they can then lift you with ease. Explain that one somebody?

That's suggestion. I saw a program on this a few weeks back. The first time, the host will usually say "As we know, this is impossible" or words to that effect, then the second time he'll be more positive about it.

Heh managed one trick where me and four other friends waggled our fingers or something and managed to pick up a fully grown 15 stone man with our forefingers.

Psychologists report Ouija Boards as nothing more than physcological suggestion. We have powerful minds and the fact we use hardly any of our minds is interesting. Did you know you use areas of your brain you hardly activate during your sleep?
So, either you have people with suggestion (the question) who collectively give an answer; or, you have spirits from the dead contacting you.

I don't own a Ouija Board. I wouldn't want to try one either. I'm not very supersticious, but these things I would like to avoid, either it's better to keep some psychological brain activity a secret, or just leave the spirits alone. I've heard stories about these things, 99% of the time something happens, 99% of the time after using a Ouija Board nobody wants to touch the thing ever again.

Explain that.

I had bone marrow and bread as a starter dish at a restaurant in Paris a few years back, and I don't want to touch that ever again! Explain that one.

It was a horrible experience, just like using a Ouija board could be?

Personally I think ghosts have better things to do than to hang out at parties to be the big scare-gag.

"'sup, Bob?"
"Nothing much... on Ouija duty tonight."

... naw.
