I have an interest in trying to get into journalism and Ive approached the editor of my college newspaper about doing a weekly film review and hes asked me to try to get him a review on Quantum of solace quickly (last minute job) so here is my effort after about 25 mins work id like you guys quick and honest (hopefully not too brutal) opinion please....

Quantum of Solace is the newest chapter in the long running and very popular line of film adaptations of Ian Flemings James Bond books. Unlike the previous films however this is the first film not actually written by Fleming himself but by a writer chosen by his son to keep the cult British hero alive. With this in mind I went to see the latest installment as excitedly as most people, hoping to be awed by 007's latest attempt to simultaneously save the world and get the girl, an ambition shared by most if not all men. Some might argue with the turn towards more gritty realism that all movies are taking these days (Casino Royale included) the writer wouldn't matter because this is just a "new Bourne movie". I can see why some people might take this view and even went into the screen expecting this, fortunately it wasn't so much like this that i noticed it.Directed by Marc Foster (Monsters Ball) and starring Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) It's a movie that has a lot of promise, which for the most part it lives up to. Like all Bond movies there are some great action scenes, with both gun and fist fights in abundance and the odd car chase thrown in for good measure, the movie goes beyond this even with some visually stunning scenes i certainly didn't expect, so its perfect for a nights action packed entertainment if nothing else. I guess what I'm trying to get across is that it hasn't changed much and thankfully feels like a bond movie. It's not going to win any Oscars but in my own opinion, worth at the very least a watch. On a side note, with all that money couldn't they have some up with a catchier name?

I dont like the last line, they wanted to stay true to the books, so didn't change the name.

There's a lot of "ifs and maybes" in there, and it didn't relly tell anything except that "it's another bond".

Also, the comparison f "same as lways, lots of action etc" is a bit weak.

Stay off the "well i dunno really" and give hard facts, without speculation.

But this wasnt one of the books though was it?

anyway i took what you had to say on board and changed it quite a bit...also added about 100 words and sent it in so either way its too late to change now...thanks for the opinions though

You must praise the movie for 4/5ths of the review, then at the last minute totally trash it because you need to have seen Casino Royale to grasp the whole story, and in the end give it a 2/5 rating because of that, disregarding any praise you previously gave it.

That's pretty much how Swedish reviewsites are reviewing it.

Not that anyone is intrested really but my review got int the paper, its not anything important but its the first time ive had anything published so im happy:) ....heres what i went with in the end

I went to see the latest Bond installment as excitedly as
most people, hoping to awed by 007’s new attempt to
simultaneously save the world and get the girl, an
ambition shared by most if not all men. Some might
argue that with the turn towards more gritty realism
that all movies are taking these days (Casino Royale
included), that the writer wouldn’t matter because this
would just be a “new Bourne movie”. While I can see
why some people might take this view, and even went
to the movie personally expecting this, it was
fortunately not the case so much so that it was
noticeable. Directed by Marc Foster (Monster’s Ball) and
starring Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Munich), Quantum of
Solace is a movie that has a lot of promise, which for
the most part it lives up to. Like all Bond movies there
are some great action scenes, with both gun and fist
fights in abundance and the odd car chase thrown in
for good measure. The movie goes beyond this even
with some visually stunning scenes that I certainly
didn’t expect, so it’s perfect for a nights action packed
entertainment if nothing else. The movies runs at about
106 minutes and about an hour in I found myself asking
the question “is this actually any good?”, to which I had
no real answer. The film bombards you with so much
action from start to finish that you have no real time to
form an opinion. Which you could see as a bad thing,
but a slow motion explosion a few seconds later
snapped me back to my senses and made me realise
something: if a movie has me paying so much attention
that I don’t have time to form an opinion on it, then it’s
doing its job perfectly. I guess what I’m trying to get
across is that Q.O.S hasn’t changed from the formula
that made the previous movies classics and thankfully
it feels like a Bond movie. This film is not going to win
any Oscars but in all honesty would you expect it to?
When push comes to shove it’s the new James Bond
movie so in my opinion it’s worth a watch at the very
least. On a side note, with all that money, couldn’t they
have come up with a catchier name?

Grammar could be improved (not saying the grammar isn't fine but it could be...extended ;))

I also think it has hints of a stereotypical review - which may be because of the time frame you wrote it in.

Journalism, I've always thought of, as partly finding your own unique style, which fits, sticks and reads well.

Sorry for my teacher aspect coming out here but....gratz on getting it in the paper Cerb! Your grammar though, for any sort of published piece, is poor.

Take care with your language, for example...

"Like all Bond movies there are some great action scenes, with both gun and fist fights in abundance and the odd car chase thrown in for good measure, the movie goes beyond this even with some visually stunning scenes i certainly didn't expect,"

Avoid simple phraseology like 'great', 'odd' and 'goodmeasure' unless you like the coloquialiism - if you were going for that approach, then actually I think it reads well. Avoid saying what 'I' expected - they want your opinion in a more stylistic manner, and not your expectations.

I am only trying for constructive criticism - I think it reads well. Gratz budster!

Well Ive always known grammer was my big let down...ill be honest 90% of the grammar in that article was done by a mate who proof read if for me first!

anyway thanks for the constructive criticism...im going to blame some of the reviews problems on the time frame and hey if i get another one in ill try to make it better and put it up here so you can teach me some more Kil :p ;)
