The other day i went out for a ciggy as normal at break time and ended up in hospital. During the course of my routine i collapsed and headbuted the floor, knocking myself out and causing me to fit (or so i was told) i was taking to hospital and had a few tests carried out, they couldn't find the cause, i have been referred to a thing called the firstfit clinic for further testing.

Anyway that’s not the point, the point is: before i don't remember anything i can remember seeing the "smokers die younger" label in front of my eyes (like when you look at a bright light and you get spots on your eyes) going from my left to right arc of vision. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar before having a fit (like seeing stuff in front of your eyes) or whether it's just a coincidence.

Also if anyone suffers from fits of any kind what sort of impact does this have on your life (im kinda worried as they don't know what is causing it..)

Many thanks Mey.

if you drive or cycle i'd suggest finding alternative means of transport untill they know what it is hun, and be careful using knives, smoking (you have a fit and drop your fag you might burn house down) just take care and think before you do anything how safe it is if unattended.

hope they find what it was sweetie and i hope it was a one off

Me too, driving isn't a problem atm as i can't physically drive with the state my eye and right arm is in. Its weird really because nobody in my family has suffered from stuff like this before (im the first wee! :D). My mum is naturally being overprotective of me but i just want to get on with my life, so hence the looking for information (minising risk, early warning signs etc..)

Guess nows a good time to quit smoking.. hehe.

guessing as tris said.

Ask if you were caughing, some people have a problem where when they caugh htey cant get oxygen to their brain and feint. usually dont fit tho, they fit if they are sitting up to open the airway and allow oxygen to the brain quicker. (note - this isnt a fit but is often wrongly described as a fit, upper body convultions).

hopefully its a one off. stop smoking.

well if it happens to be what i have id suggest the following -

if you are lieing in bed, dont stand up too quickly. sit on the edge for a bit then slowly get up.

if you smoke weed, maybe best to move as slowly as possible. standing up too quick on that is even worse if your blood pressure is already prone to dropping quickly.

basically, dont go from high and low too quickly.

Tris- i think you nailed the nail on the head tbh, as when i was about to get discharged from the hospitial again (i had been lieing down for the best part of 10 hours) i almost collapsed again. Went all feint and stuff. But my signs were all normal (i think my mums aid my blood pressure was abit higher..).

I'll see what this firstfit clinic has to say.

A friend of mine did something like that in school, we was just watching some vid in science and he just fell off the table and had a fit on the floor, only one he ever had, still too this day, that was like 5 years back, so i wouldn't worry too much yet, they can just be one offs, my sister used to get blackouts till like 10 years ago, now she dont get them at all.

Hope everything works out fine anyway:)

If its a blood pressure problem, I'm sure the usual 1 aspirin a day thing wouldn't go a miss. If you're worried about using it too regularly though, then only use it if you ever get any tell tale signs that may lead to you feinting. For example any light headedness, if you're stressed, heart palputations etc etc.

I'm no doctor but I know that aspirin if very often suggested as a way of regulating your blood pressure. I'd suggest talking to your doctor about it first though, especially if your asthmatic as aspirin slightly highers the chance of an asthma attack.

Fainting is due to low blood pressure not high blood pressure, so don't take aspirin as this will lower your blood pressure even more!

Typical things that will make you faint if you suffer from low blood pressure include standing up too fast, physical exertion then an abrupt stop (e.g. running for a bus) or anything where adrenaline sustains you.

I used to black out all the time, but I got used to the warning signals - my vision would go like the "snowstorm" display on a TV, or would slowly go grey, I'd get tunnel vision, and I'd get a high pitched ringing in my ears. As soon as this happened, I knew that if I didn't sit/lie down, i.e. get my head as low as possible that I'd black out, so get used to sitting down (even on the pavement) if you think you're going to black out. Chances are you won't black out when sat down, but even if you do you're less likely to do yourself an injury than if you're stood up.

*puts medic head on*

it can be down to a number of things ranging from Tiredness, lack of food/water to epilepsy

Keep track of your diet and how much you drink/drugs you take.

Your body may have just reset itself, with the thing you saw it was prolly the last thing you were looking at when you collapsed.

Dont worry about it too much mate, i have treated mates you have collapsed and never had any probs again ever after that
