Ctrl+Z to undo!!!

Failing that *if* its a recent version of word, restarting can *sometimes* restore the work for you to save it.

However if restarting word is imo a last resort as it might clear some sort of cache or whatever which would end up with you losing the work :(

what version of word is it?

was the file saved at all before you lost it? (im guessing not but never hurt to ask)

do you know which key you pressed to make it disappear?

I can bet that you hit CTRL-A (select all) instead of SHIFT-A for a capital and then carried on typing. THe only way out of that is to do CTRL-Z (undo) straightaway or otherwise its a one-way trip to Retype City.

I know how you feel cos I've done it before and its waaaaaaaay annoying

You should still be able to reclaim it from the temp directory - autosave...oh you didn't have autosave...
