Are we allowed to talk about one's own website or is that still a no no on this forum?

well websites that link to a thousand other sites and have no content of their own do tend to piss me off. even if they are bacon themed :)

Well mine is a bit like that. I learned quite some time ago that no-one's interested in my opinion - the b******* - bloody know it all a lot are. I just bugger about with my site messing around with different scripts. Trying a new one out now Amazon Associate Store. Just stuffed it into a Joomla template design and made it active. Free for 30 days. Think I will redo it a bit and stick to categories related to the rest of my site - mainly videos. Decisions, decisions. Such is life. Ah bugger it think I will go and level up my Samurai a bit on UO ;).

Oh I will mention something - nearly forgot - my daoc video section is hitting no 1 spot now more often than not when peeps search for either 'daoc videos' 'or daoc movies'. Either there is a distinct lack of daoc movie sites out there or that part of my site rocks. Think it must be the former. Nice to see it happening though.

You pissed off yet?

too bad. you seem a pretty decent guitar player...why not make a blog about your fave songs and methods? I mean, linking to other people's crap is meh, linking to your own crap is awesome, no? you don't need forums or a squillion hits to have a cool site or fun content.

pretty decent guitar player?

I have a hell of a long way to go before I can call myself that. Changed the design of my site so often no-one trusts me anymore to join the forums incase I shut it all down again and they have to rejoin :). I wrecked a good view sites after drinking too much :drink:. Got hammered and would decide to 'wipe the slate clean' and start afresh. Trouble is when my members arrived at my site again there was oblivion staring them in the face once more. Never seemed to bother me though as I just quite enjoyed creating a new site. Not sure I am cut out for creating an online community somehow ;). My site is pretty stable now I suppose cos I ain't drinking much if at all. Couple of cans now and then. More than that and I get the urge to destroy. I also get the urge to rejoin Freddys again too which is how I managed to get back on here this time. Couple of cans and a few sherries that night was enough for me to want to post on here, especially when I read my name mentioned somewhere. Maybe I should start a website up related to booze? Guitar playing and booze go hand in hand come to think of it.

You either need to create content for a site or just not bother. If you're not gonna bother then you might as well see if it creates enough $$$ to pay for the domain to stay alive.

If you are gonna bother, then just don't make it out to be something it's not. I've got a couple but I cba with them and they sit there.

Are you an expert on Joomla templates?

I am not an expert on anything really except I seem to have picked up a lot of knowledge about using templates from one script in other scripts. I do it all the time. One active site - can be anything including wordpress - and I can create linked sites to it using the initial script template so that the whole site appears uniform.

My own site has about 8 or so separate scripts - arcade scripts, wordpress, movie scripts - and all share the same design from Joomla.

You have a problem to solve?

Joomla can be a real pain in the butt on some servers with regard to file and category permissions. An excellent component is JoomlaExplorer which allows you to alter permissions and upload files etc. On my own server I couldn't touch anything with regard to Joomla and it's directories. JoomlaExplorer allowed me access to alter the stuff I needed to alter. If you are having any trouble with regard to above then try JoomlaExplorer out.

no, but you're getting there. not really a fault of your own (egads!) my criteria for others are just waay to high.

Guitar playing and booze go hand in hand come to think of it.
write about that then, though making forums and linksites is a complete waste of time imo, unless you have something to actually talk about. you having forums on your site for example. I don't mean to be rude, but why? why would someone sign up? what would they talk about. Content first, discussion later imo/

You either need to create content for a site or just not bother.
what he said tbh.

is fuggz buggz?
fucking lol :D

linksites

You seem to consider my site as a linksite? Not sure I am following you there. The sections you see when you visit my site are categories and subdomains. There are over 500 Daoc player made movies with trailers hosted on my own vps, there are movie trailers that are pulled directly from Youtube, public domain movies that are streamed onsite, arcades of which there are 4 and 2 commercial projects for software and amazon shopping. There isn't a section that links to outside interests at all. The only reason that the homepage appears to be lacking content is because it didin't exist until recently, and the same goes for the forum. I only created the homepage using joomla to unify all the site design so that I could make one big site instead of all separate sites.

Why join the forum?

Lets consider Freddys shall we? Where is the content there? If I remember rightly Freddys wasn't Freddyshouse at first but Barrysworld or something like. The only reason Barrysworld was so popular was because of DAOC. Again Barrysworld had very little content as it was mainly a forum. So why do people post on forums? Well because they find forums that are related to their interests. 'If you create them they will come' as the saying goes. My own forum has only been up and running for a few weeks but I am pretty sure when I spend time creating interesting forum titles peeps will start to join as they always do.

As for content well my site is mainly for movies and streaming. Enough of a subject matter there to add content to the homepage if I decide too. Not sure it is needed though as when I analyze site visitors paths they just use the homepage to shoot off to the section they are interested in. If I could control the whole site though Joomla and only allow each section to be accessed by members then it would be perfect. More or less impossible though - can't be arsed to work it out either.

So no I don't consider my site to be a 'link site'.

Well my memory is a little vague on that score. All I seem to remember was the Daoc section of the forum. I know that was very active. To be honest I can't remember much about the rest of Barrysworld. I still consider Freddysworld to be dependant on the Daoc community or derived from it. Mostly daoc forum members who have branched off to post in other sections.

Wow I have heard this from so many daoc forum members it is ridiculous. You are too smart to have said that meaning it, therefore it is blatant trolling. Hell there is an announcement by ted the dog at the head of the forums, and has been there since day one of FH.

Aha, Fuggz = MKJ, our old resident joomla link & affiliate spammer :)

Damn I been caught - again.

Still interested in website stuff as in how they are constructed but I ain't into spamming affiliation links anymore. Hard to explain or give examples of code if you can't publish the page you might be referring too. Just thought to clear the air and see where the boundaries are.

yes. the only thing on there that is worth anything are the player videos for the DAoC game. everything else on there is just pulled from somewhere else.

'If you create them they will come' as the saying goes.
only if a need is forfilled. what need does your site forfill?

Hell that is an eye opener. Never knew shit about that. Thought they were just a couple of guys that setup a forum or 2 and struck lucky with Daoc :D.
well, now you know. BW/FH has existed since the dawn of time, went through an incredible amount of development, with tonnes of people working on it at certain points both community and otherwise. these forums still exist today, because Deebs happens to be an awesome fellow.

Either there is a distinct lack of daoc movie sites out there or that part of my site rocks. Think it must be the former. Nice to see it happening though.

It's something I wouldn't recommend touching. Nearly every DAoC video contains copyrighted music which the author of the video has no rights to use. You can get away with it whilst your site is quite small, but once it becomes more popular there's a chance that some music organisation will either demand you take it down or demand you pay rather large fees.

The old daocmovies.net got too popular too quickly, it hosted all the files and from what I remember got targetted by GEMA (German version of the BPI). I didn't bother carrying on with the Camelot Archive (my bittorrent DAoC video site) as it didn't seem like a good idea to risk it.

I know you could probably get away with it for a long time, but I wouldn't risk it. You try and offer a free service for the community, helping other players by hosting their videos. However if the music organisations look at your site you could be lucky to get takedown notices to shut up shop, in the worst case you'll end up paying for it.

Ahhh - at last I am too successful at creating websites :D. Finally.

The vps is costing my dosh anyways so if I had to shut it down it wouldn't bother me. My whole site is just an experiment. Just somewhere where I could look at scripts and learn. Would be a lot better off restarting again and just having a little personal one as TDC mentioned. Trouble is parts of the damn site are used quite a lot so I try to keep it going for them.

Are sites that hit no1 on google searches worth anything? I notice my daoc section is getting to be no1 on google searches for 'Daoc Videos' and 'Daoc Movies'. Is there somewhere I can sell it off for humungous amounts of dosh - like Microsoft?

Fuck all. Youtube can't make money, what makes you think your collection of videos for an MMO that doesn't even make the top 10 MMO list would be worth anything?
