Yup i had it to... Either from Breed or Desert Rats V Africa Corps ... so even if they dont work anymore they wont be missed :)

Not been mentioned here yet but this has also been included in one Demo (Toca 2) so it might start to get difficult to avoid the damn thing :/ wouldn't mind it if it -
Explained that it was going to be installed
Didn't have a performance hit
Didn't record the system details

As copy protection is a neccesity but this system is taking it to far...

tbh i dont know why they dont have activation in games already? as long as you can swap the licenses between machines without to much trouble should be a good thing. After all more money for PC games makers means more games which means more competition against EA :)

I don't have it and I've installed/played two of the games on that list (PoP and Broken Sword 3).

I have it... I own X2: The Threat, from that list

No wonder the game was running like a dead man walking. Which caused me to stop playing.
Fucking bastards.

I assume it accecces the internet via the operating system, so I have no idea what's been sent out already?

I don't have it now...

I just reformatted about a week ago so thats why.

However I installed X2 before i formatted so I probably had it then. Even then X2 launcher pretty much forced me to get a cd crack. When you run it, there CD check on the launcher with a progress bar checking the CD. For me this process was taking over a minute.

So yes. Copy protection has gone too far.

I have True Crime: Streets of LA installed but I dont have this Starforce thing installed.

Are you sure that game is supposed to have it?, i never use the default location so prehaps it doesnt install when you change the install path.

Yes, true crime definately has it - there was a huge piece on Bluesnews a while back about how it had gone around 4 weeks after retail before it made warez, the starforce devs we're calling it a victory over 'the underground'... etc etc.

Xav

//edit: but I've just found out that again, like PoP it depended which region you got it from, True Crime from the US for instance is definately SF3 but some other regions got Safedisc protected copies.

Yep, a lot of people have reported that. The removal tool doesn't work for everyone either - again I'm only guessing but it's probably safe to say the different forms of StarForce probably need different versions of their removal tool to 'purge'.

It appears I've got it on mine as well. I don't recognise any on the list apart from PoP which never even installed. I'm not convinced I even tried to install it on myown PC, rather Damini's so gawd knows where else the lil bastards could have come from.

I didn't use the removal tool, I just deleted them in device manager and rebooted and they've gone for now. Does that removal tool immunise agaisnt them too?

No, every future game you install which uses starforce will re-add it to your PC, and chances are any starforce3 protected games will refuse to run once it's removed.

Also, it's been known that-that Starforce crap, can install itself again on a secondary boot. So i'd just make doubly sure you're rid of it Kenny. :)

Bugger, X2 got me as well

Ditto. I quickly removed the bugger before I went to the opticians today. What further pisses me off is that I'd already uninstalled X2 itself, yet the bloody StarForce drivers were still there.

Now I wonder where EXACTLY we should moan at to express our displeasure at this to try and decrease the chances of it happening more. I'd hazard a guess that it's the publishers rather than the developers you want to be moaning at.

From comments in this thread I'm wondering if this is why I couldn't get EAC to use my CD drive for ripping audio CDs, when I had managed to get it working under win98 (and thus pre X2).

Heh, did you read the thread bud? I did point that out in my first post ;)

And yes, it's publishers who are to blame. Having spoken to the guys @ brat I've heard all about the demands from their publisher (CDV) for them to go with StarForce3...

One publisher aka 'The Adventure Company' uses SF3 in _all_ their new titles.

Petitioning publishers won't have anything close to the desired effect, if enough people were serious about it then litigation seems to be the only avenue to get a real result...

Yep, a lot of users have reported to that effect, seems the new versions writes stuff all over the shop to ensure that even if uninstalled after a reboot it's replaced...
