BBC NEWS | England | Hereford/Worcs | Nurse sacked after smacking son

Mum smacks kid - kid rings police - police arrest mum n hold her for a day and a half - kids taken into care - kids put on child protection register - mum loses her job as a school nurse.

The whole thing is a complete nonsense - the police should have come around and given the kid a smack for phoning them and wasting their time.

I'm all for reasonable child protection but this is just state meddling frankly!

That's just ridiculous, it's getting beyond stupid when the police are arresting parents for disciplining their children.

She was on Radio 5 on Friday morning IIRC (9am+) talking at length. It is indeed a remarkably stupid case, they have also been prevented from fostering (if its the same woman).

This is just wrong. No wonder ASBO's were invented. No discipline at home or at school anymore. I grew up and got smacked by my teachers and my parents. My kids were smacked by me.

Result? I am a good person, and my kids are fucking amazing. People comment on how polite and well behaved they are.

This just makes me unbelievably sad and a little nervous. I'm a nurse....when I have kids, is the same thing going to happen to me?
This is why I have now taken to saying to my patients in recovery....I just need to have a look to make sure you're not bleeding/oozing/your leg is still there, which means I'm going to have to touch you....is that ok? I've actually had one guy who said it was but that he also wanted all the other nurses to check as well....coincidence that he'd just been circumcised and we had no male nurses on that day? Thats for you to decide....

It does seem like an utter shambles- Red tape gone mad.

Of course every parent should have the right to discipline their child.

However I do feel sorry for social workers, as we only ever hear when they have got it wrong. They are damned if they do and damned if they dont. They must HAVE to follow up all suspected cases. And those boys sound like they were convincing.

As for the Police, that really is ridiculous, again they must have a duty to investigate, but it spiralled out of control and just got stupid.

Bet those boys never lie again!:)

And yes I smack my kids cos I believe it is the parents job to teach them right from wrong (not the teachers). Only as a last resort or if they are going to do something really dangerous, like run across the road, or stoke the fire! (mine are little). You decide on the appropriate punishment...naughty stair, no toy etc but sometimes a smack is right for the short sharp shock of it!!

That poor woman tho, and her families ordeal. At least she is standing up for herself and not taking it lightly.
Good on her:)

I'm sure they are required to follow up all suspected cases but it is somewhat concerning that they apparently didn't inspect the children to determine if they exhibited any signs of malnourishment or physical abuse.
